Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join the CPU physical design team to own implementation of CPU core blocks from RTL to GDS, focusing on timing, power, area, and physical implementation methodologies.
Collaborate with RTL, verification, clocking, and full-chip teams to deliver high-performance, power-efficient silicon at advanced process nodes.
Experience Level
Senior - typically 7+ years of relevant experience (or Master's degree with 4+ years) working on integrated circuit/physical design.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include implementation, analysis, and cross-functional integration:
- Own physical design and implementation of CPU core blocks or subsystems, including floorplanning, placement, routing, and design closure.
- Execute synthesis, static timing analysis (STA), power analysis, and physical verification.
- Drive convergence of timing, power, and area (PPA) metrics and debug complex design issues across design stages.
- Develop and optimize design flows and automation scripts.
- Collaborate with RTL, verification, clocking, and full-chip teams to integrate blocks into larger designs.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers where applicable.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Experience with IC design tool flows (Synopsys and/or Cadence) including synthesis, place-and-route, STA, and design closure.
- Hands-on experience with PV convergence, static timing and power analysis.
- Physical design verification experience: formal equivalence, timing checks, electrical rules, DRC/LVS, noise and electromigration analysis.
- Scripting: TCL plus at least one other interpreted language (Python, Perl, Ruby, etc.).
- Experience synthesizing digital logic blocks integrated into large SoCs or IP.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Exposure to CPU micro-architecture and RTL-to-GDS methodologies.
- Familiarity with Synopsys Fusion Compiler / ICC2 / PrimeTime or Cadence Genus / Innovus toolchains.
- Knowledge of floorplanning, routing techniques, clock distribution, noise analysis and reliability verification.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering (or related technical field) with 7+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in the same fields with 4+ years of relevant experience.
