Job Title
Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Senior Physical Design Engineer responsible for RTL-to-GDSII physical implementation of mixed-signal SoCs on the Edinburgh ASIC physical implementation team. The role coordinates with digital design, analogue layout, DFT and verification teams to deliver tapeout-ready consumer-market ASICs.
Works independently and within cross-functional project teams to meet schedule, quality and signoff targets.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Prior industry experience in a Physical Design role is required; years-of-experience guidance not specified.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform all aspects of RTL-to-GDSII physical implementation for complex ASIC projects.
- Collaborate with Digital Design, Analogue Layout and DFT teams to ensure on-time, high-quality results.
- Participate in project scoping, planning, and design review activities.
- Develop and improve place-and-route (P&R) methodologies and flows.
- Drive timing closure, ECO implementation and signoff readiness.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Hands-on experience with industry-standard digital implementation and signoff EDA tools.
- Familiarity with Synopsys Design Compiler and PrimeTime.
- Familiarity with Cadence Innovus, Voltus and Conformal.
- Practical expertise in deep sub-micron ASIC implementation, including RTL synthesis, floorplanning, power planning and clock tree synthesis.
- Experience with P&R optimization, timing closure, ECO implementation and static timing analysis.
- Experience with Logical Equivalence Checking, power and EMIR analysis.
- Proven responsibility for driving full design flow to closure and tapeout.
- Proficiency in scripting and automating flows (e.g., Python, Tcl, Perl or similar).
- Ability to debug and analyze designs, libraries and technology files.
- Good communication and strong collaboration skills across multi-discipline teams.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; equivalent practical industry experience is acceptable. (Source lists Electrical Engineering or related technical fields and allows Bachelor/Master/PhD.)
