Senior Physical Design Engineer, Annapurna Labs

Role Summary

Design and optimize physical implementation of custom SoCs used in AWS machine learning servers (for example Inferentia and Trainium). Work on RTL-to-GDSII physical closure, methodology development, IP evaluation, and cross-functional integration at datacenter scale.

Member of the Cloud-Scale Machine Learning Acceleration team collaborating closely with RTL, architecture, CAD, and verification teams to deliver production-quality silicon.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

• Collaborate with RTL and architecture teams to assess architectural feasibility and power-performance-area trade-offs.
• Drive IO/core subsystem and block physical implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place-and-route, and ECOs.
• Perform power and clock distribution design, congestion and timing analysis, IR drop analysis, and physical verification to achieve sign-off.
• Develop and improve physical design methodologies and CAD flows.
• Evaluate and integrate 3rd-party IP; specify IP requirements for physical integration.
• Collaborate across teams to ensure design quality and timely delivery at scale.

Requirements

Key qualifications and skills.

• Must-have: 6+ years of ASIC physical design experience (RTL-to-GDSII) with experience on processes such as 7nm, 14/16nm, 20nm, or 28nm.
• Practical experience with EDA tools (examples: Cadence, Mentor Graphics, Synopsys) for synthesis, equivalency verification, floorplanning, place-and-route, timing closure, power/clock distribution, congestion analysis, IR drop analysis, physical verification, and ECO.
• Proficiency scripting with Python, Perl, Bash, or PowerShell to automate flows and analysis.
• Deep understanding of sign-off activities including timing, IR/EM, and physical verification.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience mentoring, leading, or managing junior engineers.
• Experience developing CAD flows and formally specifying and driving IP requirements; several years integrating IP into designs.
• Knowledge of device physics, custom/semi-custom implementation techniques, and working with interfaces such as DDR, PCIe, and fabrics.
• Experience extracting design parameters, quality-of-result metrics, and analyzing trends to guide optimizations.

Education Requirements

Posting specifies: BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with 8+ years relevant experience, or MS in EE/CS with 6+ years relevant experience.
