Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Amazon Leo’s ASIC physical design team to define and implement digital SoCs for low-Earth-orbit communications and related ground gateways. The team develops modems, high-speed interfaces, embedded processors, and DSP solutions in advanced process nodes.
The role is responsible for back-end strategy and implementation to enable 5G-like communications between space and ground. Candidates must meet U.S. export-control eligibility (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, refugee, or asylee).
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 7+ years of relevant ASIC physical design experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on physical implementation, closure, and methodology for communication ASICs.
- Collaborate with RTL and architecture teams to assess architectural feasibility and PPA tradeoffs.
- Drive IO/core block implementation through synthesis, floorplanning, pin planning, placement & routing, and timing closure.
- Perform power and clock distribution design, congestion analysis, IR drop analysis, and physical verification.
- Execute ECOs and sign-off flows for production tape-out.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies and automation.
- Evaluate third-party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Work collaboratively across site and team boundaries in a start-up style environment.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and skills for successful candidates.
- 7+ years of experience in ASIC implementation: synthesis, static timing analysis (STA), design-for-test (DFT), and place & route for deep sub-micron nodes.
- Proven experience in timing closure, power-aware design, physical verification, and ECO/sign-off flows.
- Experience driving floorplanning, IO/pin planning, congestion mitigation, and IR drop analysis.
- Strong collaboration skills with RTL/architecture, verification, and IP teams across multiple sites.
- Eligible to work under U.S. export control rules (U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee).
Nice-to-have / preferred:
- Experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows.
- Familiarity with UPF flows and low-power design methodologies.
- Experience working in multi-site, multi-team engineering organizations.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical field; Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred. Equivalent practical experience may be acceptable where stated.
