Job Title

Senior Out-of-Order CPU Architect

Role Summary

Senior CPU architect responsible for defining end-to-end microarchitectures and architecture specifications for high-performance and low-power CPU products. Work closely with design, verification, and validation teams to set targets for performance, power, frequency, area, and feature content.

Drive novel architectural approaches, ISA extensions, verification plans, and trade-off analysis to meet market and product requirements.

Experience Level

Senior - requires extensive industry experience (posting specifies 15+ years). Strong background in CPU architecture and out-of-order microarchitecture.

Responsibilities

Main responsibilities include specifying architectures, evaluating trade-offs, and supporting implementation and validation:

  • Develop and drive end-to-end CPU architecture and microarchitecture specifications.
  • Define targets for performance, power, frequency, area, and feature set aligned to market segments.
  • Invent and specify new architectural and microarchitectural features, including ISA extensions.
  • Design and execute test plans and simulation infrastructure; analyze results with statistical methods.
  • Propose experimental changes and design alternatives to meet constraints for performance, power, area, and timing.
  • When required, implement microarchitectural specifications in RTL/SystemVerilog to assist timing and power convergence.
  • Collaborate with architects, designers, verification, and validation engineers; influence cross-functional roadmaps.
  • Identify mitigations for issues during feature implementation and debug microarchitecture and simulation problems.

Requirements

Must-have technical experience and skills, followed by preferred attributes.

  • Must-have: 15+ years in high-performance/high-frequency ARM or x86 CPU organizations in design or architecture roles.
  • 10+ years working in out-of-order pipeline sections (rename/allocation, uop/instruction schedulers, execution units).
  • 5+ years writing RTL and owning it through timing and power convergence across multiple CPU generations.
  • 2+ years building deep, high-frequency advanced integer and/or floating-point/vector schedulers.
  • Expertise in CPU architecture fundamentals, microarchitecture design, low-power techniques, RTL development, and SystemVerilog.
  • Proven ability to debug microarchitecture and simulation issues and to solve complex design problems.
  • Nice-to-have: leadership or team management experience and demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional roadmaps.

Education Requirements

Not specified.
