Job Title

Senior Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Design and develop opto-mechanical modules and subsystems for photonic gyroscope products, focusing on next-generation R&D and transfer to volume manufacturing. Work spans optical system design, mechanical tolerance/FEA analysis, prototyping, qualification, and supporting manufacturing ramp.

Experience Level

Senior-level role. The position expects 8+ years of relevant industry experience in opto-mechanical or optical systems engineering.

Responsibilities

Deliver engineering design, analysis, prototyping, and qualification of optical-mechanical subsystems and support manufacturing readiness.

  • Perform mechanical design, tolerancing, and FEA analysis for strain, vibration, thermal, and shock.
  • Develop and validate optical system designs using experimental data and system models.
  • Analyze performance metrics and derive mechanical and optical tolerances.
  • Assemble, qualify, debug, and test new opto-mechanical modules, including light sources, lenses, and detectors.
  • Design tooling and fixtures for high-precision alignment and assembly; establish build and qualification processes for manufacturing release.
  • Work with manufacturing and suppliers to support volume ramp and optical quality control.
  • Document designs, test plans, and qualification results; collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.

Requirements

Core technical skills, hands-on capabilities, and clearance/eligibility requirements.

  • Must-have: 8+ years of industry experience in opto-mechanical or optical systems engineering.
  • Must-have: Proficient with CAD (preferably SolidWorks) and FEA tools (Ansys); experience with optical design tools such as Zemax is a plus.
  • Must-have: Strong knowledge of optical systems, materials, and opto-mechanical assembly and alignment techniques.
  • Must-have: Practical hands-on skills for assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and qualifying optical subsystems.
  • Must-have: Experience working with optical element vendors and design houses to develop products and support production ramp.
  • Must-have: Ability to develop fixtures and processes to enable repeatable high-precision assembly and handoff to manufacturing.
  • Must-have: Effective team collaboration skills and independent, accountable work style.
  • Nice-to-have: Prior experience in navigation or photonic integrated circuit products and high-volume production transfer.
  • Work eligibility: Candidates must be US Persons (US citizens or US permanent residents).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree (BS) or advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering and/or Optical Engineering. The posting explicitly specifies these degrees; 8+ years of relevant experience is expected in addition to the degree requirement.
