Senior Optical Process Engineer
PsiQuantumJob Title
Senior Optical Process Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for development, documentation and transfer of assembly and packaging processes for quantum-computer sub-assemblies combining electronics and silicon-photonics chips on PCBAs for cryogenic and room-temperature vacuum systems.
Work with sub-assembly design, packaging engineering, operations and suppliers to move R&D processes into volume production while meeting quality and manufacturing targets.
Experience Level
Senior β typically 5+ years applying engineering principles to opto-mechanical or semiconductor assembly process problems.
Responsibilities
Deliver process definitions, equipment, and controls to enable R&D and volume assembly builds.
- Develop assembly process flows and build sub-assemblies for QC subsystems integrating silicon photonics and electronics on PCBAs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and suppliers to finalize design-for-manufacturability and perform FMEA to meet subsystem requirements.
- Specify, accept and verify equipment, tooling, and fixtures; complete process capability analysis and buy-off reports.
- Release process documentation, work instructions, and control plans; implement change control and train operations teams.
- Develop in-house processes and manage external contractor manufacturing; provide ongoing technical support.
- Lead hands-on during critical builds, train technicians, and support NPI pilot lines and transfer to production.
Requirements
Core technical skills and practical experience required; preferred items listed separately.
Must-have
- 5+ years applying engineering principles to solve opto-mechanical or semiconductor assembly process problems.
- Experience with semiconductor packaging and inspection processes (die attach, wire bonding, optical coupling, flip chip, underfill, etc.).
- Familiarity with assembly equipment, test methodologies, and supplier/contract-manufacturing management.
- Proven ability to document processes, perform capability analysis, and release work instructions and control plans.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, written and verbal communication skills; ability to lead technically in ambiguous situations.
Nice-to-have
- Experience with data processing tools such as Python, MATLAB, or JMP.
- Experience bringing products to volume in semiconductor, datacom, telecom, or optical-communications industries.
- Experience building NPI pilot lines and transferring processes to operations.
Education Requirements
Master's degree or higher in an applicable engineering discipline such as Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or Applied Physics.
