Senior Optical Packaging & Assembly Engineer
Role Summary
Develop and implement high-performance, robust, and scalable opto-electronic packaging workflows for chip-based photonic integrated circuits at PsiQuantum's UK R&D facility in Daresbury.
Work spans prototype development, scalable fibre-to-chip assembly processes, BOM and supply-chain coordination, and transferring designs to external vendors and partners.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The posting indicates multi-year experience: typically 3+ years in PIC packaging and qualification and 5+ years with optical fibres and measurements.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop optical package and fibre-to-chip alignment schemes that achieve high alignment accuracy and support scalable assembly.
- Create packaging prototypes and define scalable fibre-to-chip packaging flows and processes.
- Review packaging BOMs and coordinate procurement with supply chain.
- Transfer and scale packaging designs and processes with internal teams and external vendors based on prototype results.
- Work with external suppliers to source materials and provide technical feedback as requirements evolve.
- Collaborate with external partners to develop advanced opto-electronic packaging solutions.
- Perform optical measurements and data analysis to qualify and validate assemblies.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- 3+ years' experience in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) packaging design and qualification.
- 5+ years' experience working with optical fibres and optical measurement techniques.
- 3+ years' experience with FAU / optical connector to chip attachment processes.
- Experience developing scalable packaging flows and assembly processes.
- Experience reviewing BOMs and coordinating with supply chain and vendors to procure parts for assembly.
- Experience with optical data analysis and measurement validation.
- Proven ability to collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to transfer and scale designs.
Education Requirements
Master's degree or above in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field; equivalent practical experience accepted.
