Senior Optical Packaging & Assembly Engineer
Role Summary
The Senior Optical Packaging & Assembly Engineer will develop and implement high-performance, robust, and scalable opto-electronic packaging workflows for chip-based photonic integrated circuits at PsiQuantum’s UK R&D facility in Daresbury.
The role focuses on designing fiber-to-chip alignment schemes, building packaging prototypes, qualifying assembly processes, and transferring scalable processes to internal teams and external vendors.
Experience Level
Senior level. The role expects several years of technical experience in PIC packaging and fiber optics (see Requirements for specific years-of-experience guidance).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include design, prototyping, qualification, and vendor transfer of optical packaging and fiber-to-chip assembly processes.
- Design optical packages and scalable fibre-to-chip alignment schemes delivering high alignment accuracy.
- Develop and iterate packaging prototypes and production-ready assembly flows.
- Create and review BOMs; coordinate with supply chain to procure assembly parts.
- Transfer packaging designs and processes to internal teams and external vendors; support scale-up activities.
- Collaborate with external partners and suppliers to source materials and refine requirements.
- Perform optical testing and provide feedback to improve package designs and processes.
Requirements
Must-have technical experience and skills required for immediate contribution.
- 3+ years experience in PIC packaging design and qualification.
- 5+ years experience working with optical fibers and optical measurements.
- 3+ years experience with FAU / optical connector-to-chip attachment techniques.
- Practical experience with optical data analysis and test methods.
- Experience creating packaging BOMs and working with procurement/supply-chain for assembly parts.
- Experience collaborating with external vendors to transfer and scale manufacturing processes.
Education Requirements
Master's degree or above in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
