Job Title

Senior Mechanical Engineer, Photonic Systems

Role Summary

Design and deliver complex optomechanical and optoelectronic packages from prototype through production readiness. Work cross-functionally with photonics, packaging, process, test, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing partners to produce buildable, manufacturable, and verifiable package designs.

Focus areas include precision mechanical design, optical alignment and tolerance control, thermal and structural analysis, and supplier-ready documentation for high-volume semiconductor-style manufacturing.

Experience Level

Senior-level. The posting requests approximately 5 years of relevant experience in optomechanical design, photonics or optoelectronic packaging, or precision mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

Deliver and document package and subassembly designs, fixtures, and test setups through prototype and production phases.

  • Own package and subassembly designs from concept to production readiness, including revision control and ECOs.
  • Develop supplier-ready drawings, BOMs, specification trees, build travelers, and assembly sequences.
  • Apply GD&T and tolerance analysis for precision optomechanical interfaces, datums, and inspection plans.
  • Design and fabricate fixtures and test setups for alignment, metrology, attach, handling, and verification.
  • Perform basic structural, thermal, warpage, and tolerance analyses to reduce build risk and guide design decisions.
  • Lead DFMEA/PFMEA, CTQ mapping, and risk-analysis activities for package and process development.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and manufacturing partners on documentation, build standards, and production support.

Requirements

Key technical skills, tools, and experience required or strongly preferred.

Must-have:

  • ~5 years of hands-on experience in optomechanical design, optoelectronic or photonics packaging, or precision mechanical systems.
  • Proven expertise with GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and tolerance analysis for optical alignment.
  • Experience with DFMEA/PFMEA, CTQ mapping, and risk-heat-map driven development.
  • Fixture and test-set design experience for optical, mechanical, thermal, and process verification.
  • Familiarity with PDM/Arena, ECO processes, drawing release, and revision control for supplier documentation.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills; experience coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with high-volume semiconductor manufacturing or supplier integration at scale.
  • Advanced skills in structural/thermal simulation tools or detailed warpage analysis.

Education Requirements

Master's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
