Senior Manager Physical Design Engineer
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Senior Manager Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Lead a Physical Design team responsible for CPU core implementation and final signoff, driving Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) optimization for next-generation microprocessors. The role combines technical ownership of full-chip physical design flows with people leadership across cross-geographical teams.
Experience Level
Senior β management level. Proven leadership of physical design teams is expected; experience managing teams of 10+ engineers is preferred.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include technical leadership, delivery ownership, and team development for microprocessor physical design.
- Lead and manage a team focused on CPU core physical design implementation and signoff.
- Oversee full-chip floorplanning, CTS, placement & optimization, routing, and parasitic extraction.
- Ensure static timing analysis (STA), IR/EM analysis, physical verification, and final signoff meet project targets.
- Collaborate with RTL teams to improve PPA and resolve design integration issues.
- Drive flow development, automation scripting, and EDA tool strategy to improve cycle time and quality.
- Mentor, coach, and develop engineers; influence team culture and execution across locations.
- Apply strong technical problem-solving and debugging to overcome complex implementation challenges.
Requirements
Core technical and leadership qualifications. Items listed as "Must-have" are essential; "Nice-to-have" are additional advantages.
Must-have
- Deep, hands-on experience in microprocessor physical design, timing closure, and signoff for complex CPU designs.
- Proven leadership delivering large, challenging designs on schedule and to PPA targets.
- Proficiency with industry EDA tools and signoff flows (examples: Synopsys FusionCompiler/PrimeTime/StarRC, Cadence Innovus, Mentor Calibre, Apache RedHawk).
- Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-resolution skills for physical implementation issues.
- Experience driving automation and flow improvements (scripting, tool integration).
Nice-to-have
- Hands-on TapeOut and SoC physical design implementation experience.
- Background in high-speed microprocessor designs and familiarity with advanced sub-micron technologies.
- Experience with custom circuit design or specialized physical flows.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication and time-management skills.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
