Senior LLVM Compiler Engineer

Role Summary

Senior compiler engineer responsible for upstream engagement with the LLVM ecosystem (LLVM, Clang, MLIR) to upstream features, refactors, and infrastructure from NVIDIA downstream repositories. The role works across internal product, architecture, and performance teams and represents NVIDIA in open-source design and code-review processes.

Base salary range: 184,000 USD - 287,500 USD.

Experience Level

Senior β€” typically 6+ years of relevant compiler or compiler-infrastructure experience.

Responsibilities

Contribute technical leadership and sustained upstream participation to integrate NVIDIA-origin features into LLVM-related projects.

  • Engage with LLVM, Clang, MLIR, and related communities to upstream features, refactors, and infrastructure.
  • Lead and participate in design discussions, RFCs, and upstream code reviews emphasizing maintainability and broad usefulness.
  • Refactor and adapt downstream code to meet upstream API, abstraction, and quality expectations.
  • Advocate for NVIDIA technical needs through prototypes, proposals, and community engagement.
  • Coordinate with internal compiler, architecture, and performance teams to identify and stage upstreaming work.
  • Translate hardware and product requirements into upstream-viable compiler solutions.
  • Help define long-term open-source LLVM strategy and act as a technical ambassador to strengthen community trust.

Requirements

Core technical skills and experience required; items marked as "nice-to-have" are beneficial but not mandatory.

  • Must-have: 6+ years working with LLVM, Clang, MLIR, or similar compiler infrastructures.
  • Must-have: Strong hands-on C++ programming skills and familiarity with modern C++ practices.
  • Must-have: Deep understanding of compiler internals: IR design, transformations, analyses, and code generation pipelines.
  • Must-have: Experience with open-source development workflows: design discussions, code reviews, and upstream contribution processes.
  • Must-have: Strong technical communication and cross-organizational collaboration skills.
  • Nice-to-have: Proven upstream contributions to LLVM or related projects.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience upstreaming non-trivial production code from downstream/proprietary environments.
  • Nice-to-have: Background in GPU architectures, CUDA, parallel programming models, or familiarity with deep learning frameworks and performance-critical GPU workloads.

Education Requirements

B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field β€” or equivalent practical experience.
