Senior / Lead FPGA Engineer
RenishawJob Title
Senior / Lead FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Hands-on engineering role to design, verify and bring up FPGA-based systems used in next-generation additive manufacturing products. Work in a multidisciplinary R&D team collaborating with electronics, software, systems, algorithms and mechanical engineering.
Depending on grade, the role includes technical leadership, architecture, mentoring and contribution across the full product lifecycle from concept through production and long-term support.
Experience Level
Senior / Lead level. Lead roles expect substantial experience leading FPGA development; senior level indicates experienced individual contributor responsibilities (senior typically 7+ years experience).
Responsibilities
Accountabilities include FPGA architecture, RTL development, verification, integration and technical leadership.
- Develop FPGA architectures and RTL from concept to production release.
- Design, implement and optimise VHDL code focusing on performance, reliability and resource use.
- Perform timing analysis, constraints, timing closure and design optimisation.
- Implement and verify functionality in simulation and on target hardware; support hardware bring-up and debugging.
- Develop reusable IP blocks and design frameworks for multiple projects.
- Define verification strategies, build self-checking testbenches and drive automated regression workflows.
- Capture and trace requirements; work with cross-functional teams to deliver integrated system-level solutions.
- For Lead roles: provide technical leadership, drive design reviews and mentor engineers and apprentices.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and professional experience; desirable items listed separately.
- Must-have: Strong commercial experience developing FPGA solutions using VHDL.
- Solid understanding of digital design principles: timing analysis/closure, clock-domain crossing, reset architectures, pipelining and resource optimisation, and high-speed digital interfaces.
- Experience implementing and verifying FPGA designs in simulation and on hardware; familiarity with FPGA development tools and design flows.
- Ability to communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team and produce technical documentation.
- Lead-specific must-haves: experience architecting complex FPGA systems, leading development through the product lifecycle, requirements management, design reviews and mentoring.
- Nice-to-have: experience with Intel/Altera devices and Quartus, OSVVM, VUnit, VS Code/Active-HDL, embedded software (C/C++/Python), Git, Azure DevOps and CI/CD workflows, DSP/control algorithms, high-speed/mixed-signal design, and regulated or safety-conscious product environments.
Education Requirements
Degree in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
