Job Title

Senior HPC Storage Engineer - EDA Infrastructure

Role Summary

Member of the HW Infrastructure Storage Strategy team responsible for evaluating and operating storage systems that support EDA and HPC chip-design workloads. The role focuses on hands-on performance analysis, proof-of-concept evaluations, observability improvements, and data-placement decisions across datacenter transitions.

Work at scale with petabytes of active data, millions of files per job, and thousands of concurrent users to improve engineering velocity for semiconductor design workflows.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 8+ years of relevant experience in large-scale storage or HPC infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include evaluating storage technologies, correlating storage behavior with workload performance, and defining operational policies.

  • Design and execute POCs for enterprise/HPC storage platforms (NetApp, VAST, etc.) using real EDA workload profiles to benchmark performance and metadata behavior.
  • Analyze how storage configurations affect EDA/HPC job runtime and recommend tuning or architectural changes to reduce execution time.
  • Identify gaps in storage telemetry and define required metrics and correlations between storage behavior and job performance.
  • Support datacenter lifecycle activities (expansions, refreshes, site exits) by mapping workload placement and minimizing unnecessary data replication.
  • Define storage policies and best practices: lifecycle, tiering, snapshot/clone workflows, and capacity planning.
  • Collaborate with IT, EDA tool teams, operations, and networking to translate workload requirements into storage architecture guidance.
  • Investigate production storage incidents, characterize impact, identify root causes, and recommend preventive measures.
  • Contribute to the long-term storage strategy and roadmap for next-generation compute, AI workloads, and hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

  • 8+ years experience with large-scale NFS and networked storage systems in Linux environments.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one enterprise or HPC storage platform (NetApp, VAST, Pure, Lustre, GPFS, Ceph, Weka, etc.).
  • Strong Linux systems skills and storage performance analysis; ability to characterize how storage affects workload outcomes.
  • Proficient in Python and Bash for automation and tooling.
  • Experience with cloud-based storage solutions (GCP Filestore, NetApp Cloud Volumes, AWS FSx, or similar).
  • Experience with observability and metrics systems - building or using dashboards and telemetry pipelines (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana).

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with EDA infrastructure or semiconductor design workflows and their storage I/O patterns.
  • Familiarity with enterprise storage features: instant clones, snapshots, caching tiers, data tiering policies (e.g., FlexClone/FlexCache).
  • Experience correlating infrastructure telemetry with job scheduler data (LSF, Slurm).
  • Background in datacenter migration planning, capacity modeling, or multi-petabyte data-placement strategy.
  • Experience with container technologies (Docker, Enroot).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
