Senior FPGA or ASIC Engineer
Role Summary
Join MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development team to design and prototype advanced sensor, communication, and navigation systems on embedded hardware platforms. The role supports research and development projects that produce proof-of-concept prototype systems for government sponsors.
Work focuses on FPGA and/or ASIC component development, SW/HW implementation of algorithms, and system-level integration for low-SWaP and high-throughput signal processing applications.

Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include rapid prototyping and development of embedded hardware platforms and collaborating across disciplines to deliver functioning prototypes.
- Design and develop FPGA and ASIC components for embedded systems.
- Implement algorithms in hardware and software on SoC and FPGA-based platforms.
- Integrate third-party IP and peripherals; perform system integration and bring-up.
- Apply RTL synthesis, simulation, verification, and testing workflows to meet project requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams on architecture, documentation, and delivery of prototypes.
- Support verification, test, and deployment activities for prototype systems.
Requirements
Must-haves are practical skills and clearance eligibility; preferred items are listed as nice-to-have.
- Must-have: Strong programming foundation and experience with RTL languages (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog) and RTL synthesis/simulation tools.
- Must-have: Experience implementing complex embedded systems and integrating IP.
- Must-have: Familiarity with industry best practices for design, verification, test, and deployment.
- Must-have: Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must-have: U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
- Must-have: Ability to work on-site a minimum of four days per week (Onsite role).
- Nice-to-have: Experience with AMD Xilinx MPSoC/RFSoC/Versal or Intel Agilex SoC platforms.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with ASIC flows, EDA tools (synthesis, timing closure, place & route), and foundry processes.
- Nice-to-have: Scripting and build tools (Tcl, Python, CMake), MATLAB, and experience with UVM/OVM and hardware emulation platforms.
Education Requirements
Typical qualification guidance: a Bachelor’s degree plus ~5 years related experience; or a Master’s plus ~3 years; or a PhD with relevant experience - or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred fields include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar technical disciplines. (M.S. or PhD is listed as preferred.)
