Senior FPGA Engineer - Simulink (Remote)
AndurilJob Title
Senior FPGA Engineer - Simulink (Remote)
Role Summary
Design, implement, verify, and sustain FPGA firmware derived from MATLAB/Simulink algorithms for communications and networking systems. Work within a cross-functional embedded systems team (RF, DSP, firmware, software, test) to deliver production-grade embedded processing solutions on low-cost FPGAs, SoCs, and SoMs.
Drive firmware architecture, development workflows, simulation, verification, integration, and system-level testing to ensure reliable fielded products.
Experience Level
Senior - typically 6+ years of relevant FPGA design and firmware development experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include translating algorithms into FPGA implementations, maintaining firmware development lifecycles, and supporting system integration and test.
- Collaborate with RF, DSP, firmware, software, and test teams to deliver embedded processing solutions for communications and networking.
- Implement and optimize FPGA firmware from MATLAB/Simulink algorithms through architecture, HDL design, simulation, verification, and system testing.
- Establish and improve HDL/firmware workflows, coding standards, and verification best practices.
- Develop microprocessor interface control documents (ICDs) and message/data handling schemes between FPGA and host processors.
- Integrate, test, debug, and support FPGA-based boards and systems, including PCBA-level diagnostics.
- Support sustainment activities and production readiness for embedded firmware.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and background for day-one success.
- 6+ years designing, implementing, and verifying FPGA systems using VHDL or Verilog.
- Experience using code generators or toolchains to translate MATLAB/Simulink algorithms into FPGA implementations.
- Proficient in C and C++ for embedded firmware and host integration.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded software development.
- Familiarity with common MCU/CPU/FPGA devices and standard interfaces (Ethernet, I2C, SPI, PCIe, USB).
- Familiarity with flight software architectures and embedded systems development processes.
- Proficiency using basic electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators) and testing PCBAs.
- Demonstrated experience working with cross-functional hardware and embedded systems teams to bring firmware/software from concept to production.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Nice-to-have skills that improve effectiveness in the role.
- Experience with wireless communications systems and complex communications board designs.
- Expertise in computer networking.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted code tools (e.g., CoPilot, Claude, Code-GPT).
- Experience implementing enhanced security measures for firmware and systems.
- Experience with high-reliability or aerospace designs and redundant aircraft systems.
- Familiarity with DO-254, DO-178C, DO-160, DO-311A and MIL-STD standards (MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-461).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
