Senior FPGA Engineer - Simulink

Role Summary

Work on FPGA implementations for embedded communications and networking within cross-functional teams (RF, DSP, Firmware, FPGA, Software, Test) in a defense context.

Deliver firmware from MATLAB/Simulink algorithms through architecture, HDL design, verification, integration, and sustainment for low-cost FPGAs, SoCs, and SoMs.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 6+ years of experience in FPGA design and embedded systems.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

• Collaborate with RF, DSP, firmware, software, and test teams to develop embedded processing solutions for communications and networking.
• Translate algorithms from MATLAB/Simulink into FPGA firmware and optimize implementations for target devices.
• Lead FPGA firmware lifecycle activities: architecture, HDL design (VHDL/Verilog), simulation, verification, system integration, and testing.
• Establish and improve development workflows and best practices across the HDL/firmware lifecycle.
• Develop microprocessor interface control documents (ICDs) and message/data handling schemes between FPGA and processors.
• Support integration, field testing, troubleshooting, and sustainment of board-level and system-level designs.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience:

• 6+ years designing, implementing, and verifying FPGA-based systems using VHDL or Verilog.
• Experience using code generators to translate MATLAB/Simulink algorithms into FPGA implementations.
• Proficient in C and C++; experience taking firmware/software from concept to production.
• Experience with RTOS and familiarity with common MCU, CPU, and FPGA devices.
• Familiarity with standard interfaces: Ethernet, I2C, SPI, PCIe, USB.
• Proficiency with electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators) and PCBA testing.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with wireless communications systems and computer networking.
• Familiarity with aerospace/high-reliability designs, redundant aircraft systems, and relevant standards (DO-254, DO-178C, DO-160, DO-311A, MIL-STD-810/704/461).
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools and implementing enhanced security measures.
• Experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting complex communications board designs.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent; or equivalent practical experience.
