Senior FPGA Engineer (RF/Comm Systems, Simulink) - Remote

Role Summary

Design and deliver FPGA firmware for communications and networking products by translating algorithms from MATLAB/Simulink into verified HDL implementations for low-cost FPGAs, SoCs, and SoMs. Work on cross-functional teams including RF, DSP, firmware, software, and test to move designs from requirements through production and sustainment.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 6+ years of relevant FPGA and embedded systems experience (posting specifies 6+ years).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include implementation, integration, and verification of FPGA-based embedded processing solutions for communications and networking.

• Collaborate with RF, DSP, firmware, software, and test engineers to deliver production-ready embedded systems.
• Implement and optimize FPGA firmware development lifecycle from algorithm (MATLAB/Simulink) through architecture, HDL design, simulation, verification, and system test.
• Develop and maintain HDL (VHDL/Verilog) for low-cost FPGAs, SoCs, and SoMs; optimize for real-time performance and resource constraints.
• Establish and improve firmware workflows, code-generation flows, and verification practices.
• Create microprocessor ICDs and message/data handling schemes between FPGA and host processors.
• Integrate and test hardware using standard EE equipment and verify PCBAs and system-level behavior.
• Support system integration, certification-relevant processes, and sustainment activities.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and clearances are listed below; preferred skills follow.

• 6+ years designing, implementing, and verifying FPGA systems using VHDL or Verilog.
• Experience translating MATLAB/Simulink algorithms into FPGA implementations using code generators.
• Proficient in C and C++ and experienced taking firmware/software from concept to production.
• Experience with RTOS and embedded software development.
• Familiarity with MCU/CPU/FPGA devices and common interfaces (Ethernet, I2C, SPI, PCIe, USB).
• Proficiency with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and PCB testing.
• Familiarity with flight software architectures and embedded systems development processes.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with wireless communications systems and computer networking.
• Familiarity with aerospace/high-reliability designs, redundant aircraft systems, and standards (DO-254, DO-178C, DO-160, DO-311A, MIL-STD variants).
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools and implementing enhanced security measures.
• Experience designing and troubleshooting complex communications board designs.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
