Senior FPGA Engineer (RF/Comm Systems, Simulink)

Role Summary

Work on FPGA firmware and embedded processing solutions for communications and networking as part of a cross-functional engineering team (RF, DSP, Firmware, FPGA, Software, Test). Deliver FPGA implementations from algorithm prototyping through architecture, design, implementation, verification, and system integration for low-cost FPGAs, SoCs, and SoMs.

Senior - requires significant prior experience; the posting specifies 6+ years of FPGA design, implementation, and verification experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include translating algorithms to FPGA firmware, establishing HDL workflows, and supporting integration and sustainment of embedded systems.

• Collaborate with RF, DSP, firmware, software, and test teams to define requirements and deliver production-ready embedded processing solutions.
• Implement and optimize FPGA firmware from MATLAB/Simulink algorithms through HDL, simulation, verification, and system test.
• Establish and maintain product development workflows and best practices across the HDL/firmware lifecycle.
• Develop microprocessor ICDs and message/data handling schemes between FPGA and host processors.
• Support integration, system testing, troubleshooting, and sustainment of FPGA-based products and PCBAs.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, security eligibility, and hands-on experience.

• 6+ years designing, implementing, and verifying FPGA-based systems using VHDL or Verilog.
• Experience using code generators to translate MATLAB/Simulink algorithms into FPGA implementations.
• Proficient in C and C++ for embedded development and interfacing with FPGA systems.
• Experience with RTOS (real-time operating systems) and embedded software development.
• Familiarity with common MCU, CPU, and FPGA devices and standard interfaces (Ethernet, I2C, SPI, PCIe, USB).
• Familiarity with flight software architectures and embedded systems development processes.
• Proficiency with EE test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators) and testing PCBAs.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with wireless communications systems and computer networking.
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, Code-GPT).
• Experience implementing enhanced security measures and high-reliability aerospace designs.
• Familiarity with aircraft systems architectures, redundancy, and standards (DO-254, DO-178C, DO-160, DO-311A, MIL-STD-810/704/461).
• Experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting complex communications board designs.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
