Job Title
Senior FPGA Engineer & Project Lead – DO-254
Role Summary
Lead technical activities for DO-254 safety-critical FPGA hardware projects, overseeing FPGA design, verification, integration, and project-level coordination for real-time embedded aerospace systems.
Work with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with certification objectives, schedule, and quality targets.
Experience Level
Senior — posting specifies 3 to 8 years of FPGA design and development experience (VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical leadership, project planning, and hands-on FPGA design and verification.
- Provide technical leadership for DO-254 complex electronic hardware projects and drive issue resolution.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices, communication, and project discipline.
- Define project-level scope, objectives, success criteria, and maintain detailed project plans with timelines, milestones, resource allocation, and risk assessments.
- Coordinate FPGA development activities: estimate workload, allocate tasks, and track progress.
- Design, implement, and verify FPGA/CPLD hardware in compliance with DO-254.
- Perform requirements analysis, detailed design, root-cause investigation, and implement corrective actions.
- Develop HDL (VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog), simulation environments, and verification tests, including HIL.
- Use FPGA tools for synthesis, simulation, and integration; generate and drive testing strategies through verification teams.
- Manage risks and issues, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure alignment with schedule, quality, and compliance objectives.
Requirements
Key must-have skills and constraints derived from the posting. (Education requirements are listed separately below.)
- 3 to 8 years of FPGA design and development experience using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
- Hands-on experience with FPGA toolchains for synthesis, simulation, and integration; embedded systems experience; C programming is a plus.
- Familiarity with DO-178C, PCB/CBA work, or SoC architectures is a benefit.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication/interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently, lead work packages, and coordinate technical teams.
- Willingness to travel approximately six weeks per year; preference for candidates near Platteville, WI or Hartford, CT.
