Job Title

Senior FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Develop and deliver production-quality FPGA designs across major vendors (AMD, Altera, Microchip, Lattice) for defense-related electronics. Work within the Effector Subsystems Products (ESP) team to take designs from requirements and architecture through verification, integration, and production release.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.

Responsibilities

Primary engineering and delivery responsibilities for FPGA-based embedded processing and system interfaces.

  • Design and deliver FPGA releases from proof-of-concept through production.
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, software engineers, and program management on requirements, architecture, and integration.
  • Develop RTL (VHDL) for reliability, maintainability, and reuse.
  • Verify designs using directed and constrained-random tests; track functional and code coverage.
  • Create and maintain requirements, verification plans, user guides, and configuration artifacts.
  • Support integration, lab debug, and system-level testing using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related tools.
  • Participate in internal and external technical reviews and drive projects to schedule and budget.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for day-one effectiveness.

  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in digital design and HDL coding targeting configurable logic devices.
  • Proven experience delivering FPGA solutions for system-level applications.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with one or more FPGA vendor families and toolchains (Altera/Intel, AMD, Microchip, Lattice).
  • Experience with timing constraints and achieving timing closure on FPGA designs.
  • Digital simulation experience (e.g., Questa, RivieraPro or similar) and verification methodologies.
  • Proficiency with scripting or programming (Python or C) for test, automation, or tooling.
  • Practical lab integration and debug skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and hardware platforms.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance is required.

Nice-to-have

  • Radar, image, or RF/EO signal-processing experience; gigabit/multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs) knowledge.
  • Experience with embedded processors / SoC integration (MicroBlaze, Nios, ARM) and Linux-based FPGA workflows.
  • Familiarity with interfaces/protocols such as AXI, PCIe, SPI, I2C and tools like Git/GitHub.
  • Knowledge of encryption standards (AES, RSA, ECC) and hardware verification on platforms.
  • Prior technical lead or project lead experience.

Education Requirements

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics) and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience. Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering is listed as preferred.
