Job Title

Senior FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Join MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development team to design and implement prototype sensor, communication, and navigation systems on embedded FPGA/SoC and ASIC platforms. You will work on real-time and high-throughput signal-processing systems, rapid hardware prototyping, and tightly integrated low SWaP-C platforms that support government research and development projects.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typically requires 5+ years of related engineering experience working on digital/embedded systems and FPGA design.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include rapid prototyping and end-to-end component development for embedded hardware systems.

  • Design and implement FPGA and ASIC components for advanced sensor, communication, and navigation systems.
  • Implement algorithms in hardware and software on embedded platforms (SoC/MPSoC/RFSoC/etc.).
  • Integrate third-party IP and SDR platforms into custom designs.
  • Optimize designs for performance, power, size, and cost (SWaP-C).
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams across architecture, implementation, verification, and test.
  • Support documentation, version control, and deployment of prototype systems.

Requirements

Must-have:

  • Strong programming foundation and experience with one or more RTL languages (VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog).
  • Practical experience with RTL synthesis and simulation toolflows.
  • Experience implementing complex embedded systems and integrating IP blocks.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices for design, verification, test, and deployment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Ability to work on-site a minimum of four days per week.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience on reconfigurable SoC platforms (AMD Xilinx MPSoC, RFSoC, Versal; Intel Agilex SoC).
  • Experience across digital design phases: architecture, verification (UVM/OVM), timing closure, place & route.
  • Familiarity with scripting and build tools (TCL, Python, CMake) and MATLAB for signal-processing tasks.
  • Exposure to EDA tools for ASIC flows and hardware emulation platforms.
  • Understanding of processor interfaces (memory-mapped peripherals, interrupts) and microelectronic circuit concepts.

Education Requirements

Typical qualification combinations noted in the source: a Bachelor’s degree with ~5 years related experience; a Master’s degree with ~3 years related experience; or a PhD with relevant experience. The posting also allows equivalent combinations of education and related work experience. Preferred fields include Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar technical disciplines; advanced degrees (M.S. or PhD) in EE/Computer Engineering or related fields are listed as preferred.
