Role Summary

Design and implement FPGA-based embedded controllers for semiconductor etch and deposition equipment. Work within the Global Products Group's centralized software engineering team to define hardware/software/firmware partitioning, drive design decisions, and ensure integration with system-level software and peripherals.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 12+ years of experience in embedded system architecture and design.

Responsibilities

The role is responsible for end-to-end FPGA solutions for embedded controllers used in semiconductor equipment.

• Implement FPGA designs for embedded controllers and own requirements, architecture, and implementation.
• Collaborate with process, systems, software, electrical, firmware, and mechanical engineers to architect embedded solutions.
• Define HW/SW/FW/FPGA partitioning and influence system-level design decisions.
• Design interfaces and control logic for peripherals: RTDs, thermocouples, actuators, stepper motors, heaters, pressure and flow controllers.
• Model signal-processing algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink and port them to RTL for FPGA deployment.
• Drive verification, release processes, and test automation for FPGA deliverables.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

• 12+ years experience in embedded system architecture, multiple analog/digital I/O, FPGA, DSP and microcontroller-based products.
• Proficient in FPGA design using VHDL or SystemVerilog and able to write clear design documentation.
• Experience with Xilinx Vivado block design and AXI bus-based designs.
• Understanding of FPGA design cycle and verification using UVM and FPGA release processes.
• Skilled in MATLAB and Simulink for experimental modeling and prototyping; able to port algorithms to RTL.
• Experience with Xilinx Zynq systems and interfacing to applications running on an RTOS.
• Knowledge of DSP concepts (FFT, FIR, IIR) and communication protocols: SPI, I2C, EtherCAT, Ethernet, RS232.
• Practical experience with analog circuit analysis, schematic design, lab test equipment, and scripting (Python).
• Experience with source control (Git) and issue-tracking/tooling (Atlassian suite); strong written and oral communication skills.

Education Requirements

BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science. The role typically expects extensive practical experience (about 12+ years) in embedded system and FPGA design.

Preferred Qualifications

Nice-to-have skills that strengthen candidacy.

• Prior semiconductor equipment experience or distributed embedded controls system experience.
• Software development in C++ or C#.
