Role Summary

BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems seeks a Senior FPGA Design Engineer to lead FPGA/SoC design and integration for space and high-reliability electronic systems. The role focuses on architecture, development, verification, and technical leadership within multi-disciplinary engineering teams.

Position includes a $10,000 sign-on bonus for eligible external hires.

Experience Level

Senior — typically requires 4+ years of related experience with additional credit for advanced degrees.

Responsibilities

Work as a technical lead on FPGA and SoC digital designs for space and high-reliability applications.

  • Architect and lead complex FPGA/SoC designs using AMD (Xilinx) tools and IP.
  • Develop FPGA implementations of digital filters, image processing algorithms, communication interfaces, and SOC architectures.
  • Integrate digital IP and embedded processors into FPGA/SoC platforms.
  • Drive design verification, documentation, and technical roadmaps for products.
  • Collaborate across electrical, systems, and program teams; communicate designs and status to stakeholders.
  • Maintain regular and predictable work schedule and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work on-site three or more days each scheduled week as required by the program.

Requirements

Key technical skills and practical experience required or strongly preferred.

Must-have:

  • 4+ years related experience in electronic or embedded systems design (note: degree/experience substitution described under Education Requirements).
  • Experience with VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog for FPGA development.
  • Experience with FPGA design tools such as Xilinx Vivado/Vitis or Mentor ModelSim/QuestaSim.
  • Practical experience with digital IP integration and requirements flow-down for system/subsystem/board needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with OVM/UVM verification methodologies.
  • Familiarity with high-speed interfaces (PCIe, Ethernet) and signal integrity tools (e.g., HyperLynx).
  • Experience with DSP algorithms, image processing, or cybersecurity techniques.
  • Prior experience in space, aerospace, or other high-reliability environments.

Education Requirements

BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required OR equivalent technical experience. Master’s or Ph.D. degrees may substitute for additional years of experience (each higher degree may substitute for two years). Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Degrees should be from institutions accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
