Senior Field Application Engineer – AI
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Senior Field Application Engineer – AI
Role Summary
Join the AI and HPC Center of Excellence to provide hands-on field engineering support that enables customers and partners to run AI training and inference workloads on AMD datacenter platforms. The role combines workload execution and performance analysis with customer-facing activities such as presentations, training, and RFP support.
Based in the United States (Austin, TX) with ~10–20% domestic and international travel.
Experience Level
Senior — experienced individual contributor with a senior-level background in AI system performance and customer-facing engineering (title indicates senior level).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include hands-on workload execution, performance characterization, and direct customer engagement.
- Enable customers to run AI workloads on AMD Instinct GPUs, Pensando Pollara AI NICs, and EPYC CPUs; support partners in RFP responses and POCs.
- Execute and tune training and inference workloads using common frameworks and benchmarks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, MLPerf, Hugging Face, etc.).
- Investigate system- and software-level impacts on performance; compare performance versus competitors.
- Produce technical documentation: internal guides, whitepapers, tuning guides, and training collateral.
- Deliver presentations and technical training to customers and partners, remotely and in person.
- Work cross-functionally with GPU business unit, engineering, architecture, platform, software, and product teams; file and drive resolution of customer issues (JIRA).
- Contribute to Total Cost of Ownership analyses to support pricing and bids.
Requirements
Strong practical AI engineering skills and customer-facing experience are required; below are must-have and nice-to-have items.
- Must-have: Current hands-on role working on AI training or inference workloads as a core responsibility.
- Must-have: Demonstrable experience executing and tuning workloads on GPUs and familiarity with common frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
- Must-have: Customer-facing experience; ability to write technical documents and present to engineers and leadership.
- Must-have: Ability to prioritize independently, troubleshoot systems end-to-end, and drive fixes through internal teams.
- Must-have: Familiarity with Linux administration and typical HPC/AI middleware setup.
- Must-have: Willingness to travel ~10–20% annually (domestic and international).
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with ML repositories and benchmarks (Hugging Face, MLPerf) and understanding performance differences.
- Familiarity with MLops and virtualization/container tools (KVM, Kubernetes, OpenStack, OpenShift).
- Programming experience in HIP, CUDA, Python, C/C++, Fortran, OpenACC, OpenMP.
- Knowledge of inter-node networking impact at scale, datacenter deployment/management, memory/cache hierarchy analysis, or low-level inspection/assembly.
- Prior experience in automotive, finance, healthcare, or defense verticals; government security clearance is a plus.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a technical field preferred (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics). The posting does not state a strict degree requirement or an explicit "equivalent experience" clause.
