Senior Fiber Assembly Process Engineer
PsiQuantumJob Title
Senior Fiber Assembly Process Engineer
Role Summary
Develop advanced assembly instrumentation and processes for high-performance, high-throughput fiber splicing and validate fiber/splice reliability at datacenter scale. The role sits at the intersection of fiber engineering, opto-mechanical automation, optical assembly manufacturing, and semiconductor process development.
Work closely with optical packaging, assembly validation, and industrial partners to deploy equipment, measurement methods, and simulation-driven design validation.
Experience Level
Senior — typically 5+ years of relevant experience in fiber optics, optical system development, and assembly.
Responsibilities
Deliver instrumentation, methods, and analysis to reduce fiber splice loss and variability and ensure manufacturable, reliable fiber interfaces at scale.
- Investigate and root-cause sources of fiber splice loss and loss variability.
- Design, develop, and deploy advanced fiber processing equipment in collaboration with industrial partners.
- Develop and implement measurement methodologies to validate fiber and splice losses at datacenter scale.
- Use optical simulation tools to model fiber–fiber interfaces, assess modal properties, dispersion, coupling, and loss mechanisms.
- Perform experimental validation and model closure for optical performance predictions.
- Work with optical packaging and assembly validation teams to define test methods for performance and reliability of fiber interfaces.
Requirements
Key technical qualifications and skills required for successful performance in this role.
- Must-have: 5+ years' experience in fiber optics, optical system development, and assembly.
- Must-have: Strong practical knowledge of optical fibers, fiber splicing, and fiber measurement equipment.
- Must-have: Experience with optical simulation tools and experimental model validation.
- Must-have: Proficiency in Python and JMP for data analysis.
- Must-have: Experience with mechanical and/or optical instrumentation automation and control.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with opto-mechanical packaging and back-end semiconductor packaging.
- Nice-to-have: Experience working with industrial equipment partners and deploying production-scale assembly systems.
Education Requirements
MSc or PhD in photonics, optics, physics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience. (Source language provided "MSc or PhD ... or equivalent industry experience".)
