Senior Equipment Engineer, Equipment Engineering
Role Summary
Develop, sustain, and optimize advanced semiconductor R&D equipment and processes in support of Custom Quantum Computing (CQC) research and development. Work cross-functionally with process development, supply chain, test engineering, product management, and external OEM vendors to prototype, qualify, and improve semiconductor process tools.
Experience Level
Senior — 10+ years of relevant engineering experience preferred, ideally in the semiconductor industry or with high-precision equipment.
Responsibilities
Deliver hands-on technical support and lead equipment improvement efforts to maximize R&D throughput and equipment reliability.
- Respond to and resolve equipment breakdowns quickly; perform hands-on troubleshooting and restore tool operation to minimize downtime.
- Lead and participate in equipment upgrades focused on serviceability, reliability, and process capability.
- Develop and maintain equipment validation, calibration, qualification, and process-of-record (POR) procedures.
- Support Design of Experiments (DOE), process window characterization, and recipe optimization with process engineers.
- Create and improve preventative and predictive maintenance schedules and documentation adapted for experimental recipes.
- Train and mentor technicians and junior engineers on tool operation, safety, and maintenance best practices.
- Manage spare parts analysis and inventory planning; coordinate RMAs and vendor interactions for component replacement.
- Interface with equipment communication protocols (SECS/GEM, GEM300) and R&D automation systems for data collection and process control.
Requirements
Minimum technical skills and experience required for successful performance in the role.
- 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably working with semiconductor equipment or high‑precision industrial tools.
- Proven project management experience leading technical projects and cross-functional initiatives.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and qualifying semiconductor or similar process equipment.
- Knowledge of equipment cleanliness and safety standards such as ISO, CE, UL, SEMI, and NFPA.
- Experience developing validation/calibration procedures and supporting DOE/process characterization.
- Familiarity with equipment communication protocols (SECS/GEM, GEM300) and basic automation/integration concepts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers and work effectively in teams.
- Experience coordinating with OEM vendors for installations, hookups, acceptance testing, and RMAs.
Education Requirements
Associate's or Bachelor's degree (AS/BS) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field is listed as a basic qualification.
