Senior Engineer - SW Design (RAIL)

Role Summary

Develop foundational embedded software for Silicon Labs wireless MCUs and the RAIL SDK, enabling customers to build reliable, low-power wireless products. The role involves working close to hardware and collaborating with firmware, silicon, systems, and test teams.

Owner of low-level firmware components from design through release, with a focus on performance, power efficiency, and system reliability.

Senior - 5+ years professional experience in embedded software or firmware development.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities on the RAIL team include development, verification, and long-term support of low-level embedded software for wireless systems.

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for low-power wireless MCUs and SDKs.
  • Own hardware feature support across the IC lifecycle: design, pre-silicon verification, post-silicon bring-up, release, and long-term support.
  • Implement and enhance device drivers, initialization/startup code, timing-sensitive system software, and radio control features.
  • Optimize software for performance, power efficiency, memory, and CPU usage in real-time environments.
  • Debug complex issues across software, firmware, and hardware using lab tools and debuggers.
  • Collaborate with hardware, silicon, systems, and product teams to define requirements and support device bring-up.
  • Contribute to automated tests, validation, and development tooling to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Participate in code and design reviews and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

  • 5+ years of professional experience in embedded software or firmware development.
  • Strong programming skills in Embedded C and/or C++.
  • Experience developing software for microcontrollers in resource-constrained, real-time environments (bare metal and/or RTOS).
  • Strong debugging skills at the hardware/software boundary; hands-on experience with debuggers, JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
  • Experience with low-level embedded software: device drivers, interrupts, peripheral interfaces, timing-sensitive code, and memory-constrained systems.
  • Proven ability to take features from design through implementation, test, and release.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Nice-to-have (preferred):

  • Experience with wireless technologies (Bluetooth LE, Zigbee, Thread, Wi‑Fi, or proprietary radios) and PHY/MAC or radio control software.
  • Experience optimizing systems for low power, performance, and reliability.
  • Familiarity with common embedded interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, DMA, timers) and silicon bring-up or hardware validation.
  • Experience with Python or similar scripting for tooling, automation, testing, CI, and validation frameworks or hardware-in-the-loop tests.
  • Experience with multi-core MCUs, concurrency, and low-level assembly on ARM/RISC‑V or similar architectures.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools for prototyping, automation, and debugging while applying strong engineering judgment.

Education Requirements

BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.
