Physical Design Jobs, Level - Senior

Job Title

Senior Engineer, Digital Design Engineer

Role Summary

Lead methodology improvements and flow enablement for digital physical design across complex chip and SoC programs. Partner with physical design, CAD, STA, DFT, RTL/design and project teams to develop, document, and drive adoption of reusable, automated implementation flows and best practices.

Experience Level

Senior. Typical experience guidance: roughly 8+ years of relevant industry experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on methodology leadership, flow development, and cross-functional enablement rather than block-level ownership.

  • Drive physical design methodology improvements emphasizing standardization, reuse, execution efficiency, and predictable closure.
  • Develop, refine, and maintain implementation flows, scripts, and automation to reduce manual effort and improve quality.
  • Define and document guardrails, recommended methodologies, and repeatable flow practices for teams and programs.
  • Analyze power, performance, area, timing, and congestion outcomes to identify gap areas and improve flows.
  • Partner with physical design, CAD, STA, DFT, RTL, and project stakeholders to translate needs into practical methodology changes and support adoption.
  • Investigate recurring implementation and convergence issues; identify root causes and implement robust corrective actions.
  • Provide technical guidance on methodology usage, debugging strategies, and best practices to improve consistency across projects.
  • Provide targeted implementation support and validation of methodology changes as needed; support may include limited travel.

Requirements

Must-have skills and core expectations are listed below; preferred items are noted separately.

Must-have:

  • Experience developing and improving physical design flows, automation, and reusable implementation methods.
  • Solid foundation in digital physical design fundamentals (floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, optimization, timing closure).
  • Experience with industry-standard EDA physical design and signoff tools for implementation, analysis, and debug.
  • Strong scripting skills to automate workflows and scale methodology improvements.
  • Systematic problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills for recurring implementation issues.
  • Effective cross-functional communication and ability to drive alignment and adoption across teams.
  • Sound technical judgment to balance methodology quality, schedule, and implementation constraints.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience supporting advanced-node or complex SoC implementation environments.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Tcl or Python.
  • Experience applying AI/automation or data-driven techniques to engineering workflows.
  • Experience with Synopsys physical design tools (Cadence experience acceptable).
  • Experience partnering across physical design, CAD, STA, DFT, and RTL/design teams in large programs.

Education Requirements

Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field with approximately 8+ years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field with approximately 5+ years of relevant experience. Related technical degrees are acceptable; equivalent industry experience is considered.
