Job Title

Senior Embedded Firmware & FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Senior engineer responsible for embedded firmware and FPGA development for next-generation power management products, including SiC-based three-phase power conversion systems for mission-critical applications.

Work on a global, cross-functional engineering team to design, develop, validate, and release real-time firmware and FPGA implementations. This is a hybrid role (3 days in-office, 2 days remote). Relocation assistance is available within the U.S.; sponsorship support provided.

Experience Level

Senior. The posting specifies at least 3 years of relevant real-time firmware experience with a Bachelor's degree or at least 1 year with a Master's degree in relevant engineering fields.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include developing embedded control firmware and FPGA implementations, validating designs with hardware-in-the-loop, and supporting product bring-up and releases.

  • Translate system-level specifications into embedded software and FPGA architecture for new products.
  • Develop, debug, and test real-time embedded software in C/C++ for control and system functions.
  • Design and optimize HDL (VHDL/Verilog) for digital control algorithms on FPGA; perform synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure.
  • Validate controls using real-time HIL simulation and support board-level bring-up and debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG.
  • Evaluate architecture trade-offs (cost, performance, schedule) and establish system/subsystem requirements from functional specs.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project team members and collaborate with global teams on performance, safety, reliability, and component availability issues.

Requirements

Key must-have technical skills and location/work requirements. Preferred skills follow.

  • Must-have: Experience in real-time embedded firmware development (C/C++) for power-electronics control and FPGA development (HDL: VHDL/Verilog).
  • Hands-on experience with FPGA toolchains (e.g., Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus) including synthesis, simulation, and timing analysis.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and real-time validation systems.
  • Ability to debug mixed microcontroller/FPGA systems and analog/digital control circuitry using lab equipment.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital control theory and closed-loop control system design.
  • Must be able to work the hybrid schedule (3 days in-office, 2 days remote) and reside within a 50-mile radius of the Raleigh, NC facility.
  • Nice-to-have: MATLAB/Simulink proficiency, experience with PWM modulation techniques, RTOS experience, and prior power-electronics product design experience.
  • Safety awareness for working in lab environments around high voltage.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics or Computer Engineering with at least 3 years of work experience in real-time firmware/embedded software development for three-phase power electronics, OR a Master's degree in Electrical/Electronics or Computer Engineering with at least 1 year of relevant experience.
