Senior DSP Fixed-Point Design Engineer
Blue OriginJob Title
Senior DSP Fixed-Point Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Silicon Development team to convert floating-point signal-processing algorithms into high-performance, area- and power-efficient fixed-point hardware for satellite communications and aerospace applications. You will translate algorithmic models into bit-true, cycle-accurate fixed-point designs and work with RTL and verification teams to deliver flight-capable silicon.
Experience Level
Senior - typically requires 5+ years of hands-on experience in silicon/ASIC/FPGA development focused on DSP hardware implementation.
Responsibilities
Key duties include modeling, analysis, specification, and collaboration to produce validated fixed-point hardware implementations.
- Convert floating-point DSP algorithms into bit-true, cycle-accurate fixed-point models using MATLAB, C++, or Python.
- Perform quantization noise, finite word-length, and dynamic range analyses; trade off area, power, and performance against SNR/EVM.
- Specify hardware-friendly DSP architectures: pipeline structure, word lengths, rounding modes, overflow/saturation logic, and scaling strategies.
- Collaborate with RTL designers to guide implementation of multipliers, CORDICs, FFTs, filters and review RTL against reference models.
- Produce fixed-point test vectors and golden models to support pre-silicon DV and post-silicon validation for flight sign-off.
- Drive micro-architectural optimizations for low power, high throughput, and minimal silicon area in custom accelerators.
- Work cross-functionally with systems, avionics, and software teams to meet end-to-end system requirements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in silicon/ASIC/FPGA development with emphasis on DSP hardware implementation.
- Expert understanding of fixed-point arithmetic, quantization modeling, overflow/underflow handling, and scaling techniques.
- Proficiency in MATLAB, C++, and/or Python (NumPy/SciPy) for modeling, simulation, and verification automation.
- Strong DSP fundamentals: FIR/IIR filters, FFT architectures, multi-rate processing, and AGC design.
- Clear technical writing and communication skills to document trade-offs and present to engineering peers and leadership.
- Nice-to-have: experience with HLS (Catapult, Vivado/Vitis), familiarity with Verilog/SystemVerilog and front-end ASIC flows (synthesis, timing closure, formal), and exposure to wireless standards (5G/6G, Wi‑Fi) or AI/ML accelerators.
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
