Senior Director, Silicon Architecture and Design Engineering (Ethernet)
AlteraJob Title
Senior Director, Silicon Architecture and Design Engineering (Ethernet)
Role Summary
Lead Altera's Ethernet Center of Excellence, owning technical direction, multi-generation Ethernet architecture, methodologies, and roadmap across programmable device portfolios. Manage a global silicon engineering organization delivering FPGA, ASIC, and SoC products for AI, cloud, networking, and edge applications.
Experience Level
Senior - requires extensive senior leadership and technical experience (see Requirements for years guidance).
Responsibilities
Accountable for end-to-end Ethernet silicon strategy, execution, and team leadership.
- Lead, grow, and mentor a global silicon engineering organization across FPGA, ASIC, and SoC development.
- Own end-to-end silicon execution from product definition and microarchitecture through RTL, verification, DFT, emulation, implementation, bring-up, and validation.
- Define and drive Ethernet architecture across MAC, PCS, FEC, Auto-Negotiation, Link Training, and high-speed PHY/SerDes integration.
- Represent the company with hyperscale, networking, ecosystem partners, and standards bodies and translate engagement into IP requirements and reference designs.
- Provide technical leadership for networking datapath architecture: packet processing, L2/L3 forwarding, QoS, traffic management, buffering, scheduling, congestion management, and telemetry.
- Plan and drive large, complex silicon programs: resource alignment, milestone tracking, and risk management to meet performance, quality, cost, and schedule targets.
- Partner with architecture, software, systems, product planning, and manufacturing to convert requirements into executable silicon roadmaps and participate in executive reviews.
- Make cross-functional architectural tradeoffs, IP partitioning decisions, and internal-vs-third-party IP strategy choices focused on throughput, latency, PPA, cost, manufacturability, and schedule.
- Engage foundry, IP, and EDA partners; improve methodology, automation, and KPIs for quality, predictability, and velocity.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.
- 15+ years in silicon engineering, ASIC, SoC, or FPGA product development with broad lifecycle experience.
- 10+ years working in networking and Ethernet technologies, including architecture and silicon or product development for networking, switching, interconnect, or data center infrastructure.
- Deep expertise in IEEE 802.3 Ethernet architecture from MAC/PCS through high-speed PHY/SerDes integration.
- Experience with multiple generations of high-speed Ethernet up to 800G-class and AI/data-center networking features (RDMA/RoCE, lossless Ethernet, congestion control, Ultra Ethernet).
- 10+ years across silicon development lifecycle: architecture, RTL, verification, DFT, emulation, physical design, post-silicon validation, and production.
- Proven track record leading large silicon organizations and managing complex, multi-team development programs.
- Experience engaging customers, partners, and standards bodies and turning external requirements into product IP and designs.
- Must be eligible for any required U.S. export authorizations.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience at advanced process nodes delivering high-complexity SoCs or ASICs into production and standing up new teams.
- Experience with 1.6T Ethernet and 112G/224G-class SerDes, transceiver integration, FPGA or heterogeneous SoC platforms, and third-party PHY/controller IP.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science. Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
