Job Title

Senior Director, EDA & HPC Engineering Platforms

Role Summary

Lead strategy, architecture, and global operations for Qualcomm's EDA and high-performance computing (HPC) engineering platforms that support silicon and systems design. The role owns compute grids, scheduler and license orchestration, source and design data management, Linux/Unix and container platforms, observability, analytics, and IP protection across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.

This is a senior, hands-on leadership role responsible for multi-year modernization roadmaps, enterprise technical standards, budget and capacity planning, and building a high-performing organization partnered closely with engineering, CAD, security, and procurement.

Experience Level

Senior - requires extensive senior leadership experience. Typical guidance from the posting: 15+ years of progressive experience in HPC/EDA/engineering IT and 8+ years leading multi-level organizations; additional supervisory and executive interaction experience required.

Responsibilities

Accountable for end-to-end platform strategy, operations, and team leadership. Key responsibilities include:

  • Define and execute multi-year EDA/HPC platform strategy, target architecture, and investment roadmap aligned to engineering milestones.
  • Lead a global organization of directors, managers, architects, and SREs; build succession plans and operational processes.
  • Own architecture governance, ADRs, design reviews, and technical standards across platform domains.
  • Manage HPC grid and scheduler strategy (IBM LSF, PBS Pro/Accelerator, Slurm), high availability, disaster recovery, and heterogeneous compute planning.
  • Lead EDA license management and integration with scheduler and analytics to improve utilization and vendor negotiations.
  • Oversee enterprise SCM and design-data platforms (Git/GitHub, Perforce, DesignSync, legacy systems), migrations, and integration with CI/CD and artifact repositories.
  • Drive Linux/Unix platform engineering, configuration management, infrastructure-as-code, container adoption, and reproducible engineering environments.
  • Build analytics and data-engineering capabilities for telemetry, capacity planning, forecasting, and self-service BI for stakeholders.
  • Establish observability, SLIs/SLOs, runbooks, incident management, and self-healing automation for critical services.
  • Implement engineering IP protection, access control, secure enclaves, monitoring, and audit controls in partnership with Security and Legal.
  • Define hybrid/cloud HPC patterns for cloud burst, cost governance (FinOps), and safe production pilots on major cloud providers.
  • Own vendor, OEM, scheduler, storage, and cloud partner relationships; lead contract negotiations and vendor governance.

Requirements

Must-have technical leadership, domain expertise, and executive communication; degree details are summarized separately under Education Requirements.

  • 15+ years progressive experience in HPC, EDA infrastructure, or engineering IT; demonstrated large-scale program ownership.
  • 8+ years leading multi-level organizations (managers of managers); 7+ years supervisory experience; experience interacting with executive leadership.
  • Deep operational experience with large-scale compute grids and multi-vendor EDA flows; IBM LSF expertise required; PBS/Slurm preferred.
  • Proven experience with EDA license management (FlexNet/FlexLM, RLM) and license-aware scheduling.
  • Hands-on leadership of enterprise SCM and legacy migration strategies (Git/GitHub, Perforce, DesignSync, ClearCase/SVN migration experience preferred).
  • Strong Linux/Unix systems engineering, configuration management, and infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Terraform, Puppet/Salt) at scale.
  • Experience with containers and orchestration for HPC workloads (Apptainer/Singularity, Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift).
  • Proven analytics and data engineering leadership (data pipelines, analytics DBs, BI tooling) and capacity planning/forecasting models.
  • Observability and reliability expertise (Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, enterprise APM); SLIs/SLOs and incident management.
  • Experience in engineering IP protection, identity/access management (LDAP/AD, SSO, RBAC/ABAC), and working with Security/Legal on export controls.
  • Track record of owning large budgets, building business cases, vendor/contract governance, and strong executive communication skills.

Education Requirements

Posting references a Bachelor's degree and degree preferences: a Bachelor's in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, or related field is stated; a Master's degree is preferred. The posting also allows equivalent experience: the minimums were described as either 10+ years of IT-related work with a Bachelor's or 12+ years without a Bachelor's, and advanced degrees may substitute up to two years of experience (Master’s = one year, Doctorate = two years).
