Senior Compiler Performance Engineer
Intel CorporationJob Title
Senior Compiler Performance Engineer
Role Summary
Senior engineer on Intel's Compiler Engineering team in the Data Center Group, focused on compiler performance for CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators. Work spans LLVM-based toolchains, language front ends, MLIR, optimization, code generation, runtimes, and offload support.
Primary mission: analyze real-world workloads, design and productize optimizations, and deliver production-quality compiler components that improve performance, scalability, and portability for AI and HPC software stacks.
Experience Level
Senior. Typical experience guidance: Master's or PhD with 5+ years relevant industry experience, or Bachelor's with 8+ years (see Education Requirements for details).
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead performance analysis of applications, AI/HPC workloads, and benchmarks to identify end-to-end bottlenecks across compiler, runtime, libraries, and microarchitecture.
- Design, implement, and productize compiler optimizations and code generation targeting Intel CPU and GPU features.
- Own performance targets for a compiler component or workload domain; track regressions and gains via CI and performance tracking.
- Advance heterogeneous/offload compilation across SYCL, OpenMP, Triton, MLIR, and DSLs to improve portability without sacrificing performance.
- Collaborate with hardware architecture teams to influence silicon and ISA exposure through the compiler stack.
- Contribute to upstream open-source projects via RFCs, patches, and reviews; represent work to partners and the ecosystem.
- Review designs and code, influence technical direction, and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Strong, practical expertise in modern C++, data structures, algorithms, and compiler theory.
- Production experience in one or more compiler areas: middle-end optimization, backend code generation, language front end, or runtime/offload support.
- Demonstrated experience in performance analysis and tuning of real-world CPU and/or GPU applications.
- Proven ability to diagnose complex problems and deliver features through a full product cycle.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical audiences and stakeholders.
Nice-to-have (preferred):
- Substantial experience with LLVM and upstream contributions; MLIR experience is a strong plus.
- Deep knowledge of Intel x86/AVX or GPU architecture and execution models.
- Experience with heterogeneous programming models (SYCL, OpenMP offload, Triton, OpenCL, CUDA) and optimizing AI/ML workloads or integrating with frameworks like PyTorch.
- Experience with CI and large-scale performance-tracking infrastructure and cross-geography project leadership.
Education Requirements
Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years relevant industry experience; or Bachelor's degree with 8+ years relevant industry experience. Fields cited: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical fields.
