Job Title

Senior Avionics FPGA Design & Verification Engineer - TeraWave

Role Summary

Design, implement, and verify high-reliability FPGA-based avionics hardware for a satellite communications system (TeraWave). Work on requirements, architecture, RTL implementation, verification, test, and production release as part of a spacecraft systems engineering team.

Role involves driving digital architecture and SoC integration, supporting prototyping and qualification, and participating in system integration and flight support.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 7+ years of relevant experience in digital design, FPGA/SoC architecture, or related fields.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include design, verification, and support of FPGA-based avionics hardware:

  • Design and develop digital hardware architectures for high-reliability satellite avionics.
  • Author and review RTL for SoC blocks and system interfaces using SystemVerilog/Verilog.
  • Drive SoC integration and interface design; optimize architecture for performance, power, and cost.
  • Develop and execute verification plans using simulation, assertions, constrained-random methods, and coverage metrics.
  • Support prototype development, bring-up, and hardware/software integration with firmware and processors.
  • Perform timing, synchronization analysis, synthesis (RTL-to-gates), and debug complex digital issues.
  • Document design specifications, participate in design reviews, and support environmental qualification and flight release.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in digital design and SoC architecture (experience requirement extracted to Experience Level).
  • Proficiency in SystemVerilog or Verilog for RTL implementation.
  • SoC integration and interface design experience; knowledge of bus protocols (AXI, AHB, etc.).
  • Understanding of digital timing, synchronization, and RTL-to-gates design flow; familiarity with synthesis tools.
  • Experience with simulation and debugging of complex digital systems; experience with Questasim and code-coverage evaluation.
  • Strong FPGA design experience and familiarity with FPGA tool flows and device-specific constraints.

Nice-to-have / preferred:

  • Experience with avionics or space/harsh-environment electronics and qualification processes.
  • Radiation-tolerant/hardened FPGA design techniques (TMR, SEU/SEL mitigation, ECC).
  • Hands-on experience with space-grade FPGAs (e.g., Versal, RTG4, PolarFire) and high-speed serial interfaces (SpaceWire, SERDES, JESD204, PCIe).
  • Familiarity with UVM, constrained-random verification, Assertion-Based Verification (SVA), and formal verification tools.
  • Experience with safety-critical or high-reliability standards (DO-254, MIL-STD-883, NASA EEE-INST-002).
  • Hardware/software co-design and firmware integration experience; scripting and automation (Python, Tcl, Perl).

Education Requirements

B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline is required. A Master's or PhD in a related field is preferred. Equivalent practical experience in lieu of formal degree is not specified but may be considered based on demonstrated technical expertise.
