Job Title

RF Characterization Engineer

Role Summary

The RF Characterization Engineer executes RF device characterization measurements, develops test methods, analyzes data, and supports new product development. The role partners with design, product, and applications engineering teams to evaluate device performance, troubleshoot measurement issues, and deliver high-quality characterization data on schedule.

Experience Level

Mid-level / Professional - typically requires 5+ years of experience in RF test engineering, device characterization, or semiconductor product development.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include planning, running, and documenting RF characterization tests and maintaining lab measurement capabilities.

  • Develop and execute characterization test plans for RF semiconductor devices.
  • Perform RF measurements: S-parameters, load pull, pulsed RF, power sweep, harmonics, ACPR, and modulation testing.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain RF test equipment (vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, power meters, SMUs, load pull systems).
  • Analyze measurement data and prepare technical reports summarizing device performance.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, instrumentation, and measurement-related issues.
  • Develop and maintain automated test and data analysis tools using Python, Excel VBA, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Support on-wafer and fixtured RF characterization activities and maintain test procedures and calibration records.
  • Collaborate with design and product engineering teams to investigate device performance and resolve technical issues.
  • Assist in development of new measurement techniques, test fixtures, and laboratory capabilities.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience, followed by preferred (nice-to-have) items.

  • Must-have: 5+ years of experience in RF test engineering, device characterization, or semiconductor product development.
  • Must-have: Strong understanding of RF fundamentals including S-parameters, gain compression, load pull, efficiency, harmonics, ACPR, and modulation measurements.
  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with RF test instrumentation (VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, SMUs).
  • Must-have: Experience with RF load pull systems and power amplifier characterization.
  • Must-have: Experience developing automated test solutions and data analysis tools using Python, Excel VBA, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Must-have: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; effective verbal and written communication; ability to work in a team with limited supervision.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with RF semiconductor technologies such as GaN, GaAs, SOI, or silicon-based devices.
  • Experience with on-wafer RF measurements and calibration techniques.
  • Familiarity with pulsed IV characterization and nonlinear device testing.
  • Experience in semiconductor characterization or product development laboratories.
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis and database-driven measurement systems.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
