Research Scientist, AI & Systems Co-Design (PhD)
Meta PlatformsJob Title
Research Scientist, AI & Systems Co-Design (PhD)
Role Summary
Join a research team that explores, prototypes, and helps productionize software and hardware technologies for AI at datacenter scale. The role focuses on co-designing models, runtimes, and hardware to improve performance, efficiency, and reliability for large AI services.
This position spans research and engineering: from ideation and prototyping through cross-functional collaboration to influence productization and hardware roadmaps.
Experience Level
Mid-level. PhD preferred; alternatively a Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Prior research publication record and experience with system-level AI performance analysis expected.
Responsibilities
The role requires technical leadership across model, software, and hardware boundaries. Key responsibilities include:
- Co-design and optimize parallelisms, compute efficiency, and distributed training/inference algorithms for GenAI systems.
- Develop model deployment techniques to improve hardware efficiency and sustained scaling during serving.
- Benchmark, profile, model, and project AI workload performance across what-if scenarios to inform hardware and software design.
- Prototype and productionize optimized ML kernels to maximize accelerator utilization.
- Influence Meta’s AI accelerator roadmap and guide system- and silicon-level HW requirements.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives and communicate technical results to stakeholders across architecture, compiler, kernel, modeling, and runtime teams.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience. Preferred items listed separately.
- Proven research experience in hardware-aware model enablement, performance modeling of AI systems, or accelerator/silicon architectures.
- Hands-on proficiency with AI hardware architecture or on-device mapping algorithm development, including optimizations for performance, power, and area (PPA).
- Theoretical background and practical experience with modern AI models (e.g., CNNs, Transformers, LLMs, Diffusion models).
- Experience in system-level performance analysis, profiling, and benchmarking of AI workloads.
- Strong Python skills and experience with at least one major AI framework.
- Track record of publishing in peer-reviewed conferences or journals and communicating technical results to cross-functional teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience deploying AI agents or techniques focused on efficiency improvements.
- Experience with training/inference of large-scale deep learning models and distributed ML systems.
- Familiarity with low-level programming for specialized hardware (CUDA, HIP, Triton) or hardware description languages (HDL).
- Experience with Generative AI models (LLMs, LDMs) or recommendation models (DLRM).
Education Requirements
PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field is preferred. Alternatively, a Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant industry experience is acceptable. The posting also references Bachelor's degree completion as an administrative requirement (degree must be completed prior to joining) and allows equivalent practical experience.
