Job Title

Reliability Lab Shock and Vibration Testing Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Stress Test and Reliability Laboratory engineering team to develop, maintain, and operate dynamic mechanical stress testing capabilities for semiconductor devices, boards, and assemblies. The role focuses on shock, vibration, and dynamic loading methods to assess reliability and correlate test results with mechanical models.

Work with lab operations and cross-functional engineering teams to create test plans, develop fixtures and instrumentation, execute tests, analyze results, and improve laboratory capabilities.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical experience per posting: BS +4 years, MS +1 year, or PhD +6 months in shock and vibration testing or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

Execute and improve dynamic mechanical reliability testing in a laboratory environment.

  • Develop, plan, and execute shock, vibration, and related dynamic stress tests per JEDEC, IPC, or customer requirements.
  • Design and fabricate test fixtures and instrumentation strategies; configure data acquisition systems.
  • Operate electrodynamic shakers, mechanical shock equipment, and related lab hardware alongside operations staff.
  • Analyze test data using statistical and engineering methods to identify failure modes and reliability risks.
  • Correlate test results with mechanical models and FEA to validate and improve simulations.
  • Produce detailed test plans, procedures, qualification reports, and documentation.
  • Drive continuous improvement of test automation, lab capabilities, and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and calibration procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance on shock and vibration requirements through the product lifecycle.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.

  • Hands-on experience conducting shock and vibration tests with electrodynamic shakers and mechanical shock equipment.
  • Working knowledge of JEDEC and/or IPC board-level mechanical reliability standards.
  • Experience developing test plans, procedures, and qualification reports.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition systems, accelerometers, strain gauges, and vibration control software.
  • Ability to analyze vibration and shock response data and interpret failure mechanisms.
  • Familiarity interpreting FEA results and correlating them to physical testing.
  • Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and written/verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-have (preferred): industry-standard JEDEC/IPC specifics, modal/FRF analysis, FEA tools (ANSYS/Abaqus/Comsol/Nastran), Python/MATLAB/LabVIEW automation, instrumentation protocols (Ethernet, RS-232, GPIB), military/aerospace test standards, statistical methods, and lab leadership experience.

Education Requirements

Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a similar STEM field is required or equivalent practical experience: BS with 4+ years of relevant shock and vibration testing experience; OR MS with 1+ year; OR PhD with 6+ months. Experience may be a combination of education, internships, and work.
