R&D Engineer, IC Design
Role Summary
Member of a physical design team responsible for implementing ASIC blocks and chips from netlist to GDSII. The role focuses on floorplanning, placement and routing, timing closure, physical verification, and power/IR analysis to deliver manufacturable silicon.
The engineer will collaborate with block and chip teams to optimize block partitioning, block pin assignment, and automate physical design tasks.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Typical experience: 8+ years with a Bachelor's degree or 6+ years with a Master’s degree (see Education Requirements for details).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include physical implementation, verification, and automation for IC designs.
- Floorplanning, design partitioning, and block pin assignment.
- Block place-and-route (PnR) and timing closure.
- Perform physical verification (DRC/LVS) and signoff flows.
- Conduct block-level IR/EM analysis; coordinate with chip-level analysis when required.
- Write and maintain scripts to automate physical design flows and improve efficiency.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet performance, power, and area goals.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Proven experience in physical design implementation from netlist to GDSII.
- Strong skills in floorplanning, placement, routing, and timing closure.
- Experience with physical verification tools and flows (Mentor Calibre experience preferred).
- Familiarity with IR/EM analysis at block level.
- Proficient in scripting (Tcl, Perl, Python) to automate flows.
- Ability to work within a team and coordinate with RTL, verification, and tapeout teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Expertise in low-power IC design techniques.
- Experience with chip-level IR/EM analysis.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of related experience, or Master’s degree with 6+ years of related experience.
