Job Title

Quantum Device Modeling Engineer

Role Summary

Develop, validate, and deliver predictive models and model libraries for superconducting, photonic, optoelectronic, cryogenic passive, and other emerging quantum-enabling devices. Models will be integrated into Quantum Process Design Kits (QPDKs), simulation flows, and customer design environments to enable design and heterogeneous integration.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in device physics, device modeling, multiphysics simulation, parameter extraction, or characterization of non-CMOS devices.

Responsibilities

Translate device physics and measurement data into simulation-ready models and integrate them into design flows and libraries.

  • Develop physics-based, behavioral, compact, and reduced-order models for superconducting, photonic, optoelectronic, and cryogenic passive devices.
  • Plan and execute model-extraction and validation workflows using electrical, optical, RF/microwave, and cryogenic data.
  • Correlate models with measured device data and multiphysics simulation; identify limitations and implement corrective actions.
  • Define device structures, process parameters, and test vehicles needed to extract scalable models across geometry, temperature, frequency, and wavelength.
  • Implement and qualify models in circuit, electromagnetic, and photonic simulation environments; perform regression testing and convergence checks.
  • Produce model libraries and design collateral (symbols, parameter sets, interfaces, usage guidance) for QPDKs and integration platforms.
  • Collaborate with device, process, integration, characterization, packaging, PDK, EDA, and circuit-design teams to enable customer design flows.
  • Document model assumptions, validation results, known limitations, and usage guidance via technical reports and application notes.
  • Follow safety and Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements; support other projects as needed.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience required to perform the role.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in device physics, device modeling, multiphysics simulation, parameter extraction, or characterization of non-CMOS devices (superconducting, photonic, optoelectronic, RF/microwave, or cryogenic).
  • Strong foundation in semiconductor and solid-state device physics and ability to convert physical behavior into predictive simulation models.
  • Hands-on experience modeling at least one non-CMOS device class (examples: Josephson junctions, SQUIDs, superconducting resonators/interconnects, waveguides, modulators, ring resonators, photodetectors, lasers, cryogenic passives).
  • Experience correlating models with measured electrical, optical, RF/microwave, or cryogenic data and defining validation criteria across operating ranges.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming and data analysis (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent) in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Experience with one or more simulation environments (COMSOL, Ansys HFSS, Ansys Lumerical, Keysight ADS, Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre, or equivalents).
  • Ability to communicate technical conclusions clearly to cross-functional stakeholders; strong written and verbal English.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.
  • Preferred: familiarity with model QA practices, regression testing, version control, and customer-facing documentation.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with heterogeneous integration, advanced packaging, superconducting interposers, or co-simulation across electrical/optical/thermal/electromagnetic domains; project management skills.

Education Requirements

Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics, Photonics, Microelectronics, Quantum Engineering, or a related field. Preferred: Master's degree or PhD in the same or closely related fields.
