Job Title

Quantum CryoCMOS Device Modeling Engineer

Role Summary

Develop predictive, simulation-ready device and component models spanning room temperature to cryogenic regimes to enable cryo-CMOS PDKs, quantum control/readout circuits, and photonic/superconducting design flows. Work with device engineering, characterization, PDK, EDA, and circuit teams to deliver validated models and documentation.

Experience Level

Mid-level. The role requests a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in semiconductor device physics and device modeling.

Responsibilities

Translate measurements and device physics into compact and element models, validate them, and integrate into PDK/EDA environments.

  • Develop and calibrate physics-based compact transistor models for room-temperature and cryogenic operation, covering nominal, corner, and statistical behavior.
  • Create and validate simulation-ready models for superconducting and photonic elements using measured data and appropriate physics models.
  • Plan and execute parameter-extraction and model-validation workflows using electrical characterization from test structures and test chips.
  • Correlate models with measured data, TCAD or physics simulations; identify limitations and implement corrective actions.
  • Define device and test-structure requirements to support model extraction and continuous improvement for cryogenic design enablement.
  • Integrate and qualify model files within PDK and EDA simulation environments, including regression testing, convergence checks, documentation, and release readiness.
  • Analyze temperature-dependent behavior, variability, mismatch, noise, and reliability; provide guidance for circuit designers.
  • Communicate assumptions, validation results, limitations, and recommended usage in technical reports and design-team reviews.
  • Support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and collaborate on other projects as needed.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, domain experience, and tools proficiency.

  • Minimum 5 years applying semiconductor device physics to device modeling, compact-model development, parameter extraction, device characterization, or closely related work.
  • Strong background in semiconductor device physics and MOSFET behavior, including short-channel effects, leakage, capacitance, variability, and temperature dependence.
  • Experience developing or applying models for superconducting and/or photonic elements and selecting appropriate physical effects and parameterizations.
  • Hands-on experience with compact-model parameter extraction and model validation using measured device data.
  • Experience with SPICE-class circuit simulation and commercial EDA tools (examples: Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre, Synopsys PrimeSim/HSPICE, Siemens EDA).
  • Proficiency in data analysis and automation using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent scripting tools in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Ability to interpret electrical characterization data and communicate conclusions clearly to device, modeling, PDK, and design stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% and fluency in English (written and verbal).

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with commercial parameter-extraction platforms (e.g., Keysight IC-CAP, Synopsys Mystic) or internal automated extraction frameworks.
  • Advanced experience with compact-model families (BSIM4, BSIM-CMG, PSP) and cryogenic device behavior (300 K to ~4 K).
  • Background in TCAD simulation and correlation among process/device simulation, compact models, and measured silicon.
  • Experience with statistical modeling, Monte Carlo, process corners, PDK release support, model QA, and customer-facing documentation.
  • Advanced modeling experience for superconducting or photonic devices and familiarity with quantum hardware interfaces or cryoCMOS circuits.
  • Project management, strong planning, and communication skills.

Education Requirements

Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field. Preferred: Master's degree or PhD in those fields. Equivalent practical experience in device modeling and semiconductor physics is acceptable when aligned with experience requirements.
