Job Title
Product Engineer - Physical Design
Role Summary
Work on physical design flows for advanced semiconductor nodes (7nm and 5nm), focusing on placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, and timing closure using Aprisa and other P&R tools. Provide methodology development, customer-facing technical support, and training to ensure successful tool adoption and quality of results.
Hybrid role based in Bangalore, collaborating with customers and internal teams to influence product direction and mentor junior engineers.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The posting expects demonstrated hands-on physical design experience, including at least two tape-out projects; no specific years-of-experience range was stated.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement placement, CTS, and routing flows and methodologies for advanced process nodes (7nm, 5nm).
- Design, develop, and modify software, scripts, and automation to support physical design workflows.
- Troubleshoot and resolve critical customer design issues to meet performance, area, and power targets.
- Provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and guide teams on complex projects.
- Deliver customer training and ongoing technical support for Aprisa and related tools.
- Collaborate with customers and product teams to influence future enhancements and roadmap decisions.
- Introduce and validate new technologies and methodologies into physical design workflows.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Proven physical design experience with mainstream place-and-route flows and tools; minimum two tape-outs.
- Hands-on expertise in placement, clock tree synthesis (CTS), routing, and timing closure for complex blocks and full-chip designs.
- Strong understanding of timing, power, and area trade-offs and optimization techniques.
- Experience debugging complex design issues and applying systematic problem-solving.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills for customer-facing interactions.
- Familiarity with commercial P&R tools (e.g., Synopsys ICC2, Cadence Innovus, Aprisa) preferred.
- Experience with multiple voltage islands and top-level floorplanning is a plus.
- Ability to learn new flows quickly and drive quality improvements.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication, Electrical, or Telecom Engineering. Preferred: Master's degree in VLSI or Microelectronics. The posting did not state an equivalent-experience clause.
