Job Title
Principal TD Device Engineer
Role Summary
Lead development and manufacturability improvements for silicon photonic devices. Responsible for device test-structure simulation, macro design of experiments, data mining and analysis, and coordination of electro-optical testing.
The role owns a technology module, prioritizes projects based on business needs, delegates to the extended team, and collaborates with device and process teams to sustain and advance manufacturing technologies.
Experience Level
Senior. Posting requires 2 years of progressively responsible post-baccalaureate experience in a related role; principal-level ownership and leadership of technology projects expected.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Improve device performance and manufacturability; design and execute experiments; perform data mining and data analysis.
- Develop and enable open-source software and tools for device/macro design and simulation in silicon photonics.
- Own a technology module: prioritize projects, define improvement experiments, manage hardware disposition, and delegate tasks to the module team.
- Sustain and improve manufacturing technologies by ensuring product quality, reducing defectivity, improving process stability (Cp/Cpk), and increasing processing efficiency.
- Detect and diagnose line issues through data analysis and drive timely containment and resolution to protect yield and delivery.
- Collaborate with device and process teams to develop new production technologies and enable customer designs.
- Drive cost reductions through expense elimination, test and line yield improvements, and efficiency gains.
- Coordinate electro-optical test activities and perform device/test-structure simulation.
- Perform work in compliance with Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
- Position requires up to 10% domestic travel.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items listed separately.
Must-have:
- Hands-on experience in silicon photonics, electrical/computer engineering, or device physics.
- Proficiency in coding (Python, R, or similar) for data analysis and automation.
- Experience with simulation tools such as Lumerical and Cadence.
- PDK-to-tapeout flow experience for customer designs.
- Macro design capability and experience generating PCells using SKILL in Cadence.
- Experience with HFSS or other high-frequency structure simulation tools.
- Strong data mining and statistical analysis skills; capable of designing experiments and interpreting results.
- Proven ability to lead projects and coordinate cross-functional teams; willingness to travel up to 10% domestically.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience enabling or contributing to open-source software projects for photonics design and simulation.
- Experience driving process stability and yield metrics (Cp/Cpk) in a manufacturing environment.
Education Requirements
Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is required.
