Principal Systems/Applications Engineer

Role Summary

Define motor control and drive solutions for industrial, consumer, and automotive markets and support key global customers. Work across product definition, IC and package teams, test and characterization, and field application engineering to deliver products that meet system, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and customer requirements.

Provide technical leadership, customer engagement, and mentorship to systems and application engineers within the Power Management division.

Responsibilities

Partner with customers, sales, and marketing to define product architecture and system-level solutions; translate market needs into product specifications and collateral.

• Define product architecture, features, system requirements, and competitive analysis for motor control and drive solutions.
• Translate system-level requirements into IC and subsystem specifications with IC design teams.
• Collaborate with packaging teams to define pinouts, package concepts, and preliminary drawings considering electrical and thermal constraints.
• Develop product characterization plans and production test solutions with test and characterization engineers.
• Create and maintain datasheets, application notes, user guides, customer presentations, and training materials.
• Propose system-level motor drive solutions and support design-in, bring-up, and troubleshooting for key customers.
• Provide technical training and ongoing support to customers, field application engineers, and sales.
• Coach and mentor other systems and application engineers.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience relevant to motor drive systems, power ICs, and system-level productization.

• Experience defining product requirements and engaging customers to translate needs into product architecture and specifications.
• Experience with power IC packaging technologies, package concept development, pinout definition, and electrical/thermal tradeoffs.
• Hands-on experience with package laminate/substrate design, layer stack-up, routing, and thermal/electrical considerations.
• Proven experience producing technical documentation for semiconductor products (datasheets, user guides, application notes).
• Hands-on experience with BLDC/PMSM motor drive systems for industrial, automotive, or consumer applications.
• Experience with DC/DC and AC/DC power supply design; deep understanding of gate drivers, inverter power-stage operation, and protection functions.
• Familiarity with field-oriented control and trapezoidal control algorithms for BLDC/PMSM motors.
• Experience with microcontrollers (especially Arm Cortex-M): ADCs, PWM timers, PLL/clocking, Flash, and interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, LIN.
• Experience with PCB design/layout, CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD), and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, QSPICE).
• Strong analytical, system-level troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally to engage with customers.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline. 12+ years of relevant industry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
