Principal Staff Electrical Engineer - Radio Device Engineer
Motorola SolutionsJob Title
Principal Staff Electrical Engineer - Radio Device Engineer
Role Summary
Member of the Advanced Development Engineering team in Plantation, FL, responsible for designing RF transceiver systems for mission-critical public safety radio products. Work spans commercial-off-the-shelf ICs and custom mixed-signal CMOS, from architecture through silicon tape-out and product deployment.
Experience Level
Senior-level role. Basic requirements specify 16+ years of radio transceiver design experience. This position requires 100% on-site presence Monday–Friday at the Plantation, FL engineering facility.
Responsibilities
Responsible for system-level design and delivery of RF transceiver subsystems and integration into radio products.
- Translate product-level radio requirements into mixed-signal SoC and subsystem architectures (antenna tuners, PLLs, ADC/DAC, baseband/RF amplifiers, AGC, embedded processors, memory interfaces).
- Develop behavioral system models to set and manage block-level specifications across hardware, firmware and software.
- Evaluate, select and integrate internal/external IP and COTS devices for modem development.
- Optimize power and thermal performance across operating modes and low-power states.
- Collaborate with digital design, analog layout, firmware, verification and test teams from specification through bring-up and product deployment.
- Work with external SMEs and contractors to define and implement specialized subsystems in custom IC designs.
- Produce documentation: requirements, theory of operation, troubleshooting guides, and engineering & manufacturing test procedures.
- Lead technical alignment and provide direction to other engineering staff throughout development.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; a few useful preferred items are noted separately.
- Must-have: 16+ years of radio transceiver design experience and proven delivery of transceivers from concept to shipping product.
- Must-have: Deep experience in analog/mixed-signal circuit and feedback control modeling (PLLs, AGC) and verification with Cadence or equivalent tools.
- Must-have: Experience assessing and integrating 3rd-party IP and COTS ICs for modem and transceiver designs.
- Must-have: Experience with embedded processors and digital signal processing for modulation/demodulation in fading channels.
- Must-have: Experience with high-speed interfaces (e.g., hyperRAM, MIPI, LPDDR, Ethernet) and managing their interaction with RF processing.
- Must-have: Knowledge of SoC power management, clocking schemes, and multiple voltage domains.
- Must-have: Experience with Verilog-A/Verilog-AMS, SystemVerilog and UVM for AMS and digital verification; familiarity with shell/scripting languages.
- Must-have: Strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership in multidisciplinary/global teams.
- Preferred / Nice-to-have: Background in RF & mixed-signal IC and RF PCB design; experience with thermal modeling and low-power state strategies.
- Other: Travel under 10%.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required (listed as a basic requirement in the source posting). No alternative degrees or equivalent-degree language was specified.
