Principal Software Engineer
BroadcomJob Title
Principal Software Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop, and deliver software and firmware for ultra-high-performance datacenter-scale systems. Work in a small, in-person engineering team and own end-to-end technical deliverables.
Accountabilities include firmware and driver development, embedded Linux/Yocto builds, microcode and boot components, system bring-up, validation, and field support across the product lifecycle.
Experience Level
Senior - requires 12+ years of related experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include hands-on development, system bring-up, and lifecycle ownership for datacenter hardware and software.
- Design and implement firmware, device drivers, microcode, and control software for large-scale multi-processor architectures (x86, ARM).
- Develop and maintain embedded Linux/Yocto builds, OpenBMC, and ZephyrOS components.
- Perform silicon, chip, board, and full-system bring-up and low-level debugging.
- Implement and maintain boot and security components such as u-boot, Secure Boot, and Secure Root of Trust.
- Develop software for hardware interfaces and buses (I2C, PMBus, AVSbus, MDIO, PCIe, SPI, USB, SERDES).
- Implement management and telemetry protocols (Redfish, MCTP, PLDM, SPDM).
- Drive system-level validation, testing, and automation; operate debugging and test frameworks.
- Own product lifecycle tasks: customer trials, field issue resolution, sustainment, and cross-functional coordination.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.
- Expert software development in C/C++ for low-level and system software on multi-processor platforms.
- Experience with Linux/Yocto, OpenBMC, and/or ZephyrOS.
- Proven capability in early-stage bring-up, driver development, and silicon/board/system debug.
- Hands-on experience with hardware interfaces and buses (I2C, PMBus, AVSbus, MDIO, PCIe, SPI, USB, SERDES).
- Knowledge of management and telemetry standards (Redfish, MCTP, PLDM, SPDM).
- Familiarity with secure bootflows and root-of-trust implementations.
- Solid understanding of datacenter networking, switching, and NIC architecture.
- Experience developing test automation, validation frameworks, and driving system-level quality.
- Track record of lifecycle product ownership and cross-functional collaboration.
- Nice-to-have: small team lead experience or proven technical mentorship.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in engineering and 12+ years of related experience (as stated in the posting).
