Principal Software Engineer
Role Summary
Join Ramon.Space's expanding UK engineering team to lead design and implementation of software for satellite communication and space-resilient processing systems. The role focuses on embedded software, integration with hardware and communication systems, and ensuring high reliability for spaceflight deployments.
As a technical leader you will define architecture, mentor engineers, coordinate cross-discipline integration, and drive verification and validation for mission-ready software.

Responsibilities
Primary technical and leadership responsibilities include:
- Lead design, development, and optimization of software for satellite communication and signal processing systems.
- Define software architecture and system design to meet project performance and reliability requirements.
- Integrate software components with hardware, RF frontends, and communication subsystems with systems engineers.
- Perform code reviews, provide technical guidance, and mentor junior engineers.
- Conduct testing, validation, and verification to ensure software reliability in space environments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues in development and deployed systems.
- Maintain documentation of designs, development processes, and test results.
- Monitor industry trends and apply relevant best practices for space application software.
Requirements
Core technical must-have skills and experience; followed by common nice-to-have items.
Must-have:
- Proven experience developing software for embedded systems, ideally for satellite communication or other space applications.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and strong software architecture and design skills.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded Linux user-space stacks.
- Experience with software-defined radios (SDRs) and FPGA programming.
- Familiarity with software verification and validation processes and agile development methodologies.
- Experience with Yocto or Buildroot for embedded Linux builds.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.
Nice-to-have:
- Knowledge of digital communication principles and satellite communication protocols (e.g., DVB-S2X, CCSDS).
- Experience with signal processing algorithms, RF frontend development, and 5G waveforms.
- Familiarity with DPDK, VPP L2/L3 processing, ARM architectures, and Xilinx toolchains.
- Scripting experience (Bash, Python) and version control with Git.
- Experience with Linux kernel software development and new board bring-up / BSP work.
- Experience executing ESA-led projects is a plus.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (as stated in the posting).
