Job Title

Principal Product Engineer

Role Summary

Join Microsoft's Silicon Manufacturing and Product Engineering (SMPE) team within Compute Silicon & Manufacturing Engineering (CSME) to lead product and test engineering for new ASIC/SoC development and high-volume manufacturing. The role focuses on pre- and post-silicon bring-up, ATE test program implementation, power and performance tuning, manufacturing readiness, and cross-functional program execution.

Experience Level

Senior role. Candidates are expected to have substantial hands-on experience in semiconductor product development, validation, and manufacturing. See Education Requirements for the degree/experience combinations considered equivalent.

Responsibilities

This role leads product engineering activities from definition through launch and scale.

  • Lead product/test engineering for new IC/SoC development, bring-up, and manufacturing qualification.
  • Drive pre-silicon and first-silicon readiness for power, performance, thermal behavior, and power-delivery features (LDOs, integrated VRs).
  • Implement and optimize ATE test programs to meet SOC power/TDP goals and enable binning strategies.
  • Collaborate with platform/system engineers to correlate ATE results with system-level behavior and enable performance tuning.
  • Define manufacturing fuse requirements and manage end-to-end fuse data flows across test sockets.
  • Manage external vendors, coordinate cross-functional teams, and lead sub-projects within larger development programs.
  • Drive sample delivery, quality and quantity milestones across the product lifecycle.

Requirements

Required technical skills and operational competencies. See Education Requirements for degree and equivalent-experience rules.

  • Hands-on experience with semiconductor IC development, fabrication, testing, and packaging.
  • Practical experience with ATE test program development, test bring-up, characterization, debug, and yield analysis.
  • Knowledge of DFT, silicon fabrication processes, product qualification & reliability, and basic transistor theory.
  • Experience driving power/performance modeling and tuning, including ATE binning optimization and related characterization.
  • Experience defining and implementing fuse strategies and managing associated data flows.
  • Strong project leadership with experience managing vendors and leading cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Ability to work across validation platforms (ATE, RVP, customer boards) and perform failure analysis and yield recovery activities.
  • Must be able to meet required security screenings and export-control compliance; candidate must be able to present documentation of citizenship or residency when required.
  • Nice-to-have: Advantest V93K ATE experience, experience in high-performance computing/AI SoCs (GPUs/CPUs), and platform/system validation background.

Education Requirements

Doctorate (PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field + 3+ years technical engineering experience; OR Master's degree in the same fields + 6+ years; OR Bachelor's degree in the same fields + 8+ years; OR equivalent practical experience. Fields explicitly referenced: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical fields.
