Principal Physical Design Engineer (Chiplet Design)
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Principal Physical Design Engineer (Chiplet Design)
Role Summary
Lead and own the physical design for a complete chiplet, driving full-chip floorplanning, place-and-route, and signoff activities. Collaborate with architecture, IP, package, CAD/methodology, and verification teams to meet PPA and schedule targets.
Experience Level
Senior β guidance from the posting indicates approximately 15+ years of physical design experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
Key duties for this role include:
- Own physical design for one complete chiplet on advanced process nodes; lead chiplet through tapeout from a PD perspective.
- Define and implement full-chip floorplan and timing targets across PVT corners.
- Drive full-chip and tile place-and-route closure and monitor signoff flows (physical verification, IREM, etc.).
- Optimize power, performance, and area; reduce datapath latency and manage power-delivery interactions with package teams.
- Coordinate technical work with architects, IP teams, CAD/methodology, package, and verification stakeholders.
- Mentor and guide engineers; present technical status and decisions to senior stakeholders.
Requirements
Minimum and preferred qualifications, summarized.
- Must-have: Extensive experience leading full-chip physical design activities and signoff with proven PnR and floorplanning ownership.
- Must-have: Strong collaboration, communication, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills; ability to work across geographies and with senior architects.
- Must-have: Demonstrated ability to optimize PPA and meet timing targets across PVT.
- Nice-to-have: Hands-on experience with advanced process nodes (TSMC 2nm/3nm) and chiplet-based architectures.
- Nice-to-have: Experience coordinating power-delivery/co-design with package teams and driving physical verification/signoff flows.
