Principal NPI Product Engineer
SemtechJob Title
Principal NPI Product Engineer
Role Summary
Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) programs for high-performance optical and analog/mixed-signal ICs, driving projects from early silicon through production transfer. Work as the primary technical owner across design, test, characterization, quality, and operations to ensure products meet specifications and transfer smoothly to full-volume manufacturing.
Hybrid role with primary sites in Burlington, ON (Canada) or Bristol (UK); expected in-office cadence: four days per week (Mon–Thu). Estimated salary range: CAD 110,000–140,000.
Experience Level
Senior - requires significant experience. The posting requests 10+ years of semiconductor product, test, or design engineering experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include program ownership, test and manufacturability engineering, characterization and yield improvement, and quality/failure analysis.
- Own NPI programs from concept through final production release and transfer to OSAT/foundry partners.
- Lead cross-functional teams (Design, Validation, Test, Characterization, Quality, Reliability, Applications, Operations) and run milestone reviews and program logistics.
- Define and drive Design for Testability (DfT) and Design for Manufacturability (DfM) requirements.
- Develop, verify, and optimize ATE test programs and ensure ATE-to-bench correlation.
- Set production test limits and finalize datasheet specifications using statistically validated processes.
- Plan and execute product characterization across PVT; analyze ATE and bench data and maintain process capability reporting.
- Drive yield modeling, DOE planning/execution, test-time reduction, and targeted yield-improvement actions.
- Lead failure analysis, root-cause investigations, CAPA development, and collaborate with foundry and packaging engineering to resolve issues.
- Maintain manufacturing quality metrics and identify continuous improvement and cost-reduction opportunities across the product lifecycle.
Requirements
Concise list of required and preferred technical qualifications and skills. Education items are listed separately below.
- Must-have: 10+ years in semiconductor product engineering, test engineering, or design engineering with demonstrated ownership of silicon bring-up, characterization, and production transfer.
- Must-have: Hands-on experience with ATE test development, ATE-to-bench correlation, and production test limit setting.
- Must-have: Strong understanding of DfT and DfM principles and experience driving test coverage and guard-band decisions.
- Must-have: Proficiency in statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Excel) and scripting/automation (Python, TCL, or equivalent).
- Must-have: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills; demonstrated ability to lead program reviews and work with OSAT/foundry partners.
- Nice-to-have: Background in analog/mixed-signal or optical IC characterization (TIA, CDR, LimitAmp, high-speed SerDes).
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with high-speed ATE platforms (Advantest, Teradyne) and JEDEC reliability qualification methods (HTOL, HAST, ESD, latch-up).
- Nice-to-have: Exposure to ATPG, MBIST, boundary-scan DFT flows, and direct engagement experience with foundry and OSAT partners.
Education Requirements
BS in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required; MS is strongly preferred. (No alternative-equivalent wording provided in the posting.)
